The SCCC Phlebotomist 2 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. An employee in this position conducts interviews, takes vital signs, and tests blood samples. The Phlebotomist 2 relates to and interacts well with patients by taking into consideration their age-specific, physical, and psychosocial needs. The incumbent also uses the laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.

Department Specific Functions

This position will support the Lennar and Kendall Network sites and will backfill other network sites for staff vacations or emergencies.  This position is on call for nights, weekends and holidays.  This is a hybrid position that will require occasional research patient phlebotomy services (for difficult cases) and primarily laboratory sample processing and shipping preparation.  This position will support cancer research specialties and will provide research specific blood draws in the Phlebotomy clinic at Lennar. 

  • Ensure that all samples are drawn as per research protocol.
  • Process all lab samples per protocol and lab manual.
  • Prepare samples for shipping according to regulatory requirements and as Lab Manuals and Study protocols require.
  • Confirm that all necessary supplies are on hand. 
  • Ensure that all samples are processed within the required timeframes of the study protocol.
  • Communicate with research nurses about status of research sample collection (report difficult draw or inability to draw on patient).
  • Review all sample labels to ensure they match the study visit requirements.
  • Report any processing deviations to study coordinator and Lab Director/Supervisor.
  • Maintain all required certifications and professional licensing such as CITI, IATA, Lab Safety, Bloodborne Pathogens, and others (must be completed within first month of employment)
  • Support the SCCC Research Lab as needed at all sites with research phlebotomy,
  • Complete regular site training and ensure understanding of protocol/lab manual requirements. 
  • Enter required information regarding sample collection into require systems such as iLabs, UChart , Velos, and other systems  as required. 
  • Support other duties as needed. 
  • Ability to operate and interpret us of centrifuge for serum and plasma separation.
  • Ability to properly collect portions and measure distribution of specimens by aliquoting.
  • Assist in the collection of equipment calibration records such as freezer temperature logs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
