Job Description

Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs support in the preparation and distribution of medications; maintains medication and supply inventory; maintains patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as pharmacy policies and procedures, performs related work.

Examples of Duties

1. DISPENSING ACTIVITIES. Typical responsibilities include: packaging prescription medications including controlled substances requiring special handling in accordance with safety measures; separates bulk quantities of medications and medical supplies into individual doses; places unit doses of medications in patient containers; separates medication according to time-of-day for administration; repackages and labels medications; operates packaging machine to package and label medication, and sealing machine for liquid medication doses; conducts sterilization procedure for premeasured intermuscular medication in syringes in conjunction with pharmacist; prepares medications for patients on outings, pass or discharge; records orders on patient drug profile sheets; reads and interprets provider medication orders.

2. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT. Typical responsibilities include: labels, maintains, and cleans medication drawers and prepares them for 24-hour periods; alerts pharmacist to unused medications in patient containers and other unusual situations; maintains shelf stock of medications and supplies; maintains both prescription and over the counter drug inventory through inventory control practices; checks for expiration dates on medications on a monthly basis.

3.  CUSTOMER SERVICE. Typical responsibilities include: processes medication returns; help customers with technical and patient demographic questions, requests, and complaints via phone or in-person; provides customers information about products and services; triages and prioritizes phone calls to correct pharmacy personnel.

 4. RECORDKEEPING. Typical responsibilities include: maintains records of medications, procurement and distribution under the guidance of a pharmacist and state and federal regulations; maintains files of patient charts, orders, and hardcopy prescriptions; records information on resident medication files; tabulates medication recordings; documents solid and liquid medication packaging for federal and state records; keeps records on expiration dates of all medications; keeps cost-of-drugs data current; prepares medication profiles of patients; maintains proper invoicing of medications received, returned, or destroyed.

Minimum Qualifications
Good knowledge of:

  • Medical and pharmaceutical terms and abbreviations.
  • Metric measurements used in pharmaceutical applications.

Experience:

  • Using keyboard to enter and retrieve data.

Incumbent must be eligible for registration with the board of pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. Successful candidates may not begin work until pharmacy technician certification is successfully obtained from the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy.

Supplemental Information

Incumbents are required to lift and carry 30 pounds and stand for up to four hours at a time while performing job duties. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an Idaho licensed pharmacist and in accordance with Idaho Pharmacy Regulations.
