Job Summary

As members of the health care team, PGY2 Pharmacy Resident shares responsibility for providing high quality, cost-effective patient care which promotes health in the area of specialty practice. This includes evaluating and managing drug regimens for appropriateness of choice; teaching patients and their caregivers how to use drugs in the safest and most effective way; helping patients and their caregivers take an active role in managing their drug therapy; and advocating for patients the safe and effective use of drugs to other health care decision makers. The purpose of the PGY2 Pharmacy position is to develop clinical pharmacy specialists equipped with the expertise and clinical aptitude for specialty practice in acute and ambulatory settings. Areas of specialization may include, but are not limited to, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, oncology, pediatrics and solid organ transplant.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965. Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.


Required Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate or candidate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). At a minimum, the program must be a five-year pharmacy degree program.
  • Must have completed a PGY1 Pharmacy residency program that is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP)
  • Maintain exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with patients, pharmacists and other healthcare personnel and administrators.
  • Flexible; able to cope with rapid change; comfortable with an ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain effective organizational, management and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate programs in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to effectively participate in and develop a team.
  • Demonstrated clinical pharmacy skills and knowledge.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

License/Certification

  • Must be eligible for and obtain a California pharmacy intern license within 30 days of employment.
  • Must be eligible for and obtain a California pharmacist license within 4 months of employment.
  • Must be in good standing with the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Current Certification for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
