Pest Management Assistant/Technician - Suffolk, NY

Provide technical assistance for the Cornell Cooperative Extension Pest Management Program in scouting, applied demonstration, and educational activities. The Pest Management Program focuses on the implementation of pest management practices that will minimize the use of pesticides and the reduction of pests. Responsibilities include site inspection and scouting of Suffolk County golf courses for turf pests, diseases, cultural issues, and weeds. Occasional assistance with site inspections of other County properties may also be required. Responsibilities also include data collection, maintaining records of observations, and assistance with applied research as needed. This person will work with Program staff to assist in providing educational and research-based knowledge of pest management practices to Suffolk County community in accordance to Cornell Cooperative Extension recommendations.
The individual will be working with structural and turf pests which consist of rodents, cockroaches, ants, wasps, termites, flies, birds, poison ivy, tick, and etc. Because the individual will be in close contact with these pests, following health and safety protocol regarding personal protection is required.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled in HS with relevant experience.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand and implement written and oral instruction.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Possession of computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Willingness to work independently and as a team member with CCE staff, certain Cornell Faculty, cooperating and organizations agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work with a diversity of people of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, performing various field activities.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks as required.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position; valid NYS driver’s license and personal vehicle for on the job transportation, 3 years driving experience and pass a motor vehicle screening.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a college science, horticulture, or agriculture curriculum.
  • Experience with turf management.
  • Familiarity with turf grass pests, diseases, cultural issues, and weeds.

POSITION DETAILS:

Salary:            $16-17 per hour (25 hours per week)

Schedule:      NON-EXEMPT – TEMP: April 2024 – October 2024

No relocation or VISA Sponsorship available
