Job Summary

A research assistant is needed for an NIA-funded study that aims to develop a nonpharmacological pain intervention for persons living with dementia. The Research Assistant’s role will be to recruit, screen, and interview participants to identify preferred delivery characteristics and caregiver involvement in an exercise-based intervention program. They will work closely with the principal investigator and study team to develop processes to recruit, enroll, and interview participants, including individuals with dementia, their caregivers, and clinicians. They may also lead focus groups in person or online and assist with reviewing and coding transcripts, maintaining an audit trail, scheduling appointments, upkeeping study logs, generating regular reports, monitoring study team emails and online inquiries, and overseeing and conducting other study logistics. Training for qualitative research will be provided. The individual must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate study participants’ schedules and ability to complete tasks in person and remotely.

Essential Functions

  • Recruit and manage study participants, including screening via online or telephone.
  • Screen study participants, including the assessment of knee OA (i.e., pain, signs, and symptoms) and cognitive status using standardized measures (i.e., CDR, MoCA)
  • Conduct study participant interviews and focus groups
  • Manage and verify transcripts, including compliance with HIPAA requirements
  • Follow all study IRB approved protocols and procedures
  • Coding transcripts, including managing the code book, maintaining an audit trail, training students, and leading coding meetings and discussions.
  • Attend and prepare for weekly study meetings and monthly community engagement meetings
  • Communicate study team and principal investigator about schedule, changes, and study related issues
  • Generate study reports and maintain study protocol and procedure manuals.
  • Other research related activities as assigned by PI or needed by the study team

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy or related field
  • 2+ years of work experience in a clinical or administrative capacity in a facility that interacts with older adults with dementia. Leadership experience preferred. 
  • Ability to follow detailed research protocols 
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent verbal/written communication skills, and self-motivation are critical. 
  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills are required. 
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment 
  • Must be able to interact and lead effectively with study participants and coworkers from diverse backgrounds.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy or related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required. REDCap and NVivo experience preferred.

Additional Information

This is a part-time Temporary position classified as Non-Exempt.  The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
