This DOH-funded project, NYC Communities for Health (NYCC4H), seeks to provide overdose response education and dispenses naloxone and fentanyl test strips to NYC residents residing in the Bronx, Brooklyn, East New York, Manhattan, East Harlem, and Queens, Rockaway. Working with people who use drugs, their families, and the broader community, this project seeks to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance use with training and education about negative health consequences, and refer youth to treatment as needed.

The Peer Outreach Worker (Assistant Research Scientist) will specialize in recruitment and outreach utilizing a peer-based intervention approach and provide technical research assistance. As individuals with a lived experience of substance use, peer outreach workers will use their unique insight to connect with people who use drugs and offer affirming, stigma-reducing services. Further responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, participant screening, delivering evidence-based prevention practices, and coordinating and providing navigation services.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities

Outreach and Intervention Implementation:  

  • Canvass (in courtyards, lobbies, door-to-door) to introduce families to the project.
  • Screen youth for substance misuse.
  • Lead opioid overdose response training and deliver Naloxone kits and Fentanyl test strips.
  • Coordinates and provides navigation services.
  • Identifies resources for participants to overcome barriers to care, including the development of a referral network and implementation of referrals.
  • Supports participant linkage to and retention in care by adapting and implementing evidence-based practices.
  • Provides daily support for projects and performs other related duties as assigned.

Technical Research Assistance:

  • Conducts background research and literature reviews.
  • Supports additional research activities as they arise.
  • Supports data collection efforts, including surveys and interviews.

Part-time: $18- $21/ hr; 25 hours /week

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate range for this position is $18- $21. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

 

  • This is a peer position in which we are seeking to prioritize individuals with a lived experience of substance use or who are members of a recovery community.
  • Cultural competence working with Latino and Black communities is required.
  • Passionate, trustworthy, and empathetic when working with participants including people with or at risk of substance use disorders and/or people living with or at risk for HIV.
  • Previous research experience is preferred.
  • Flexible part-time schedule is strongly preferred.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) required.
  • Strong communication and rapport-building skills.
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction framework.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • A bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Google Workspace.
