Job Summary:

The Program for First Generation Initiatives is seeking 10 peer mentors to serve as live-in mentors for the duration of the Summer Bridge component of the program.

Full Job Description:

 

First Generation Summer Bridge is a two-week program at the University of San Francisco for approximately 60 incoming first-year students. Primarily an academic preparation program, the summer bridge is geared toward incoming 1st year and 1st generation college students to USF who would benefit from additional mentoring and previews into the USF experience. The program runs from Monday, August 5 to, Sunday, August 11, 2024.

​Peer Mentors can start as early as Mon., March 25, 2024, for mentor training and program preparation for the 2024-25 cohort of scholars.

Peer Mentors are expected to be available from Mon., July 29, 2024, to Friday, August 9, 2024.

Peer Mentors are required to live on campus starting Sat., August 3, 2024, through Friday, August 9, 2024.

On Saturday, August 10th, Peer Mentors are expected to vacate their Summer Bridge room and occupy their fall residences. The number of hours required of peer mentors per day will vary according to the needs of the program. Evening and weekend hours will be required. Due to the level of commitment asked of the Peer Mentors, we ask the Peer Mentors not to enroll in summer courses or maintain another job(s) during the period indicated above.

Summary of Potential Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a role model to the Summer Bridge participants and USF community.

  • Help orient students to the USF campus, providing information about academics, campus resources, and preparing for college life.

  • Help to plan and participate in educational and recreational activities for students, both on and off campus.

  • Help students with organizational skills, priority-making, and time/task management.

  • Tutor students and assist them academically.

  • Facilitate study groups and help lead workshops on issues facing students of diverse backgrounds.

  • Perform various clerical and organizational duties.

  • Serve as a liaison between students, instructors, and staff members in the program.

  • Participate in all required meetings.

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled USF students, in the 2nd year of study or beyond, in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in issues facing students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Committed, hardworking, and flexible in their job duties and responsibilities.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, empathy, and concern for students.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills.

18.07 - 20.00
