Position Description:

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking to hire a pediatric pain psychologist. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest.  Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure or clinical track) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Pediatric Psychology in the Department of Pediatrics.


The Division of Pediatric Psychology in the Department of Pediatrics has an established history of scholarship and clinical service. Clinical services provided within Pediatric Psychology include evaluation and brief therapy for health-related adjustment for a wide range of chronic health conditions, applied behavior analysis and treatment, and neuropsychological assessment. The selected individual will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams providing evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with a wide array of pain concerns served through the Pediatric Comprehensive Pain, Multidisciplinary Headache, and Abdominal Pain Clinics. Pediatric Psychology is also currently involved in Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Pulmonology, Eosinophilic, Feeding, Cardiology, NICU, and Behavior clinics with plans for expansion of services. Opportunities for cross departmental collaboration, education, research, and expansion of outpatient services and development of inpatient consultation. The position also includes supervision of psychology practicum students and postdoctoral fellows as available.

For its 2023-24 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” U.S. News & World Report ranked UI Stead Family Children's Hospital in six pediatric specialties: neonatology, diabetes and endocrinology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and urology.

Education Requirement:

Must hold a PhD or PsyD degree in Psychology from an APA accredited doctoral program

Required Qualifications:

Successful completion of an APA accredited internship and postdoctoral residency


License or eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa


Health Service Provider or eligible for Health Service Provider in the State of Iowa


Experience treating children with chronic conditions and their families


Experience as a member of an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team


Outpatient and inpatient experience in a hospital/medical center

Desirable Qualifications:

Expertise in evidence-based intervention for youth with health conditions


Clinical experience in Pediatric Psychology in an academic medical setting


Demonstrated excellence in research and clinical care


Clinical teaching of students across a variety of disciplines


Evidence of scholarly activity


Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skill


Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive culture in the workforce and academic environment
