The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for the position of Aflac Neuro-Oncology Clinician. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research and boasts a diverse faculty. Ideal candidates will have a strong record of demonstrated clinical expertise caring for pediatric neuro-oncology patients. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has close affiliations with research investigators within the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a willingness to collaborate across departmental or center boundaries is essential.

 

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country. 

• The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 115 faculty and 35 Advance Practice Providers (APPs), conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia.
• More than 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
• The Aflac pediatric oncology program sees ~500 new cancer diagnoses each year. This includes ~150 new solid tumors, ~50 of which are sarcomas. Aflac is the pediatric component of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
• The Aflac pediatric hematology program is one of the largest in the country (including >2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders)
• The Aflac blood and marrow transplantation program performs ~80 transplants each year, and is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.
• In 2021, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 6 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report
• In 2020, Aflac faculty generated $21.5M in extramural funding, including more than $12.3M from the NIH
• The Aflac fellowship program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology. We are one of the few pediatric programs with an NIH-funded T32 training grant in non-malignant hematology
• The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, and has a larger referral base in the southeastern United States. Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), NANT, TACL, and PBTC.
• The MIBG and Relapsed Neuroblastoma Program is the largest in the southeast and has treated ~100 patients with therapeutic MIBG since its inception in 2013.
• Aflac is a leading contributor to the Children’s Oncology Group, having been #1 in therapeutic trial enrollments for the past 2 years and annually in the top 4.

This position will devote the majority of effort to clinical responsibilities in the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

 

Provide pediatric psychological services for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center patients on the Bone Marrow Transplant and general consultation-liaison services, which would constitute 100% of your total effort. The breakdown of your 1.00 FTE will be:

• The final distribution of time will be arranged in discussion with, but ultimately at the discretion of, the Aflac Psychology & Neuropsychology Program Leader.
• Provide effective delivery of services consultation liaison and psychotherapy) appropriate to the patient's specific needs and severity level of disability or impairment. Integrate infection control and body substance precautions, patient safety, body mechanics, and knowledge of growth and development. This includes referral to outside agencies as appropriate.
• Demonstrate technical competence in:
• Provision of appropriate assessment and treatment, including modifications for special population(s).
• Ongoing development and successful implementation of assessment standards and treatment plans that support established goals.
• Timely documentation of weekly/monthly treatment notes and assessment reports following established standards.
• Completion of discharge and follow-up according to departmental standards, including liaison services to patient's local school systems to assist with school re-entry and consultation for IEP development, as appropriate.
• Demonstrates and practices family-centered care:
• Maintains a therapeutic relationship with patient and family;
• Communicates relevant information at the patient's and family's level of understanding;
• Identifies patient/family need for services from ancillary departments and provides follow-up and referral as necessary; includes family/caregiver participation in all phases of the patient's program.
• Evaluates patient and family psychosocial needs and provides appropriate direction to the team to meet these needs, emphasizing minimizing duplication and increasing efficiency.
• Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional growth and improvement, meeting required continuing education standards.
• Provide clinical supervision to fellows, interns, staff, students and other employees as assigned.
• Demonstrate a pattern of personal excellence and ongoing contributions in teaching and research.
• Play a role in the education and training program of the Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT Division. This would involve access to and involvement with Ph.D. and medical students, post-doctoral and clinical fellows, and physicians in practice.
• Participate in an annual review, by the Director of the Aflac Psychology & Neuropsychology, regarding your activities.

Qualifications include a doctorate from an APA/CPA-accredited program in Clinical, Counseling or School Psychology, completion of an APA/CPA-accredited internship, and completion of a two-year Neuropsychological Fellowship with a specific focus in pediatric neuropsychology. Applicants must be licensed or license-eligible to practice in Georgia and eligible for board certification in Clinical Neuropsychology. Preference will be given to candidates with related pediatric hematology-oncology experience and/or board certification (ABPP) in Clinical Neuropsychology.
