Position Summary
The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (www.med.unc.edu/pediatrics/gene) is seeking a Pediatric Geneticist to join their team. The candidate will join an established team of faculty and participate in the care and management of patients with genetic and metabolic disorders. This is a full-time, Clinical Assistant Professor/Fixed-Term position.
The ideal candidate will be a board certified/board eligible in Pediatrics/Internal Medicine and Clinical Genetics/ Biochemical Genetics who is interested in an academic position. A track record in working on longitudinal research projects, and scholarly work is desirable. The candidate must be interested in teaching learners, have demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, and been successful in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Responsibilities will include participating in clinical and teaching activities of the division with more than half of their effort devoted to research and scholarly activities. Clinical responsibilities will involve evaluation and management of patients of all ages with congenital abnormalities, connective tissue disorders, skeletal dysplasias, neurodegenerative disorders, lysosomal storage disorders and metabolic disorders in both outpatient and inpatient settings. It is expected that the faculty member will actively seek out significant research support opportunities as part of their career growth and commitment to the academic mission of the division/department.
The Pediatric Genetics team includes physicians, genetic counselors, metabolic dieticians, and nurse practitioners, who work collaboratively in caring for their patients and families with compassion and evidence-based care. We also have an active accredited fellowship training program. Our team works closely with colleagues from across the medical center, including Adult Medical and Cancer Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division are actively involved in hearing-loss research, mucopolysaccharidosis, and other LSD translational research, clinical studies evaluating the utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn screening, quality improvement projects and with the state birth defects registry.
The North Carolina Children’s Hospital is part of a busy quaternary care medical center and a major referral center for children with complex conditions in the state and region. The North Carolina Children’s Hospital has 150 inpatient beds and a comprehensive children’s outpatient center located in the same building, enabling children to see multiple specialists in a single visit. The North Carolina Children’s Hospital physicians work hand-in-hand with community hospitals and pediatricians all across the state, providing specialty care to more than 70,000 children from all 100 counties in North Carolina each year.
UNC is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) funded institution that offers support for clinical and translational researchers at all levels. This support includes seed funding, regulatory assistance, data management, drug/device development and grant preparation among other things.
