Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The Payroll Services Analyst position is responsible for analyzing Job and Benefits data in PeopleSoft HCM Payroll. This includes data for faculty, staff, and other salaried/hourly employees included in a semi-monthly payroll processing, and interpreting and analyzing gross pay, tax implications, state benefit deductions, state retirement implications, and other special issues that arise. Validate and resolve issues in accordance with established University policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and 3 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PeopleSoft or other ERP Experience preferred.
  • Higher Education experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Experience with PeopleSoft HCM application.
  • Previous FLSA training and understanding, including principles of overtime calculations.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word, PowerPoint, and experience with accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, theories and terminology of payroll, accounting, state government, retirement regulations.
  • Ability to proficiently apply mathematical concepts and analyze and interpret related data.
  • Ability to update systems and processes when new rules and regulations are implemented.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Analyze payroll tables and calculations within the Payroll for North America module of PeopleSoft HCM. Perform review, validations, and corrections on new hire actions, salaried Dual employment actions, employee salary change actions, summer compensation actions, and special pays. Review state retirement and state insurance implications on payroll actions and apply accordingly. Consult with the retirement accountant on unusual cases.

Research questions from employees and departmental contacts concerning payroll data and payroll polices, and analyze data accordingly. Respond with appropriate information and process data accordingly. Participate in Payroll Department external training sessions.

Assists PEBA Deduction Supervisor and the Payroll Operations Manager with analysis of benefit deductions for payroll purposes, benefit refunds, leave without pay benefit billing tasks, and other tasks pertaining to employee insurance deductions. Coordinates with Payroll Account Reconciliation team to address individual accounts that are not in balance and follow-up on actions to bring employee accounts into balance.
