Unit Mission Statement
Financial Operations is responsible for the comprehensive accounting, bursar and payroll activities of the university.
Payroll Office is responsible for processing all university payrolls, payroll tax depositing, employee deductions. Process all reporting requirements within the parameters of federal, state and laws/regulations as well as to ensure internal controls are in place to safeguard William & Mary.
Position Summary
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for payroll transactions and providing excellent customer service to employees. Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Accountant maintains an accurate accounting of payments by making various journal entries related to payroll processing. Performs complex vendor account reconciliations from payroll activities.
Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
• Computes earnings, withholdings, miscellaneous deductions and related payroll information.
• Verifies the accuracy of completed forms, ensures the authorized deductions are made from employee paychecks and disbursed to the proper agencies and/or companies.
• Performs validation of the semi-monthly payroll and generates pay rollrosters, to show each payee, their with-holdings, retirement, benefits, wages, dues, and related information.
• Reconciles payroll and benefit expenditures and conduct financial reporting.
Conditions of Employment
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive over-time in accordance with the fair labor standards act.
  • This position may require occasional over-time during high-peak periods, as approved by supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or other related field or equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.
  • Experience processing payroll transactions or performing basic accounting functions.
  • Experience working with an automated accounting or payroll system.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP), including state and federal tax reporting requirements relating to payroll
  • Demonstrated knowledge of benefit withholdings, vendor payment processes, general ledger reconciliation and other payroll functions
  • Proficiency in MS Suite (especially Excel and Outlook).
  • Demonstrates strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a strong customer service orientation, with the proven ability to work collaboratively
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with attention to detail.
  • The proven ability to handle multiple priorities with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Substantive experience in a payroll function.
  • Experience in higher education financial operations highly desirable.
  • Experience with Banner Finance and Workday.
