Part-Time Maintenance Assistant (Portal, AZ)

The Southwestern Research Station (SWRS), located in the rural community of Portal, Arizona, is a non-profit biological field station owned by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The SWRS has been in operation since 1955 with the primary mission to encourage and support biological research and conservation. The SWRS hosts researchers, students, workshops, courses and naturalists from around the world. Primarily, providing room and board, laboratory space, technical equipment and support facilities for those studying the extraordinary biodiversity of the Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding environments.
SWRS has an opening for a part-time Maintenance Assistant, who will work two days (16 hours) per week to cover the Maintenance Chief's days off. The position is seasonal (March 1-October 31) and reports to the Maintenance Chief.
Job duties include:

  • General maintenance work (i.e., lighting, painting, carpentry, plumbing, general troubleshooting, minor repairs and fixing), landscaping and garbage management.
  • Picking up volunteers.
  • Picking up supplies and parts.


The expected salary for the Maintenance Assistant is $18.25/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
