The University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music invites applications for a Part-Time Lecturer in Vocal Performance to begin on August 16, 2024. This is a two-semester appointment ending May 15, 2025.

Combining the benefits of a world-class conservatory and a leading research university, the USC Thornton School of Music offers students the opportunity to pursue a thorough music education in a real-world context. A new educational model for undergraduates in the Classical Performance & Composition Division, launched in fall 2019, renews Thorntons commitment to a virtuosic education and asks students to reimagine what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century. Thornton offers students a full range of musical disciplines across a demanding innovative curriculum, and the opportunity to work with a faculty of national and international renown. With a student cohort that is largely BIPOC, gender expansive, and with a wide range of ages and experiences, the applicant must be adept at teaching, communicating and empathizing with an extraordinarily diverse student population.

The student body at USC is diverse: it is racially and ethnically a majority/minority population with a full range of expressions of gender, ability and sexual identities which we embrace as a source of institutional strength and community pride. The Universitys commitment to building an academic environment hospitable to this wide range of diversity is full and complete. To that end, we are seeking to create as diverse a pool of candidates as possible, one which reflects the broad diversity of identities and experiences that comprise the country as well as the field of vocal performance.

Duties

Principal duties will include teaching individual instruction to Vocal majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As currently projected, this position will teach a studio of approximately 10 to 14 graduate and upper-class undergraduate students of all voice types. The actual teaching load will depend on enrollment and may vary. Additional duties include leading periodic studio classes throughout the semester and attending department meetings, auditions and juries as needed and requested.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a record of success in teaching individual studio instruction at the collegiate or pre-professional level, and demonstrated excellence as a distinguished performer of operatic and concert repertoire.

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor of Music Degree.

  • Minimum Experience: A record of successful teaching of advanced students, either in a private studio setting or within a university or conservatory. Consideration may be given for extensive professional performance experience, in operatic and/or concert settings, in lieu of other qualifications, if appropriate.

  • Preferred Education: Masters Degree in Music or closely related field.

The base salary range for this position is $24,000 $30,000 per semester, based on a projected studio enrollment of 12 students. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the actual number of students assigned to the studio, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

To Apply

Interested candidates must apply through the USC online system. Candidates are asked to provide a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and email addresses for three references who may be contacted for letters if needed. Do not send recordings and other supporting materials unless requested. Materials will not be returned.

USC is an equal-opportunity educator and employer, proudly pluralistic and firmly committed to providing equal opportunity for outstanding persons of every race, gender, creed and background. The University particularly encourages women, members of underrepresented groups, veterans and individuals with disabilities to apply. USC will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with known disabilities unless doing so would result in an undue hardship.
