NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Introduction to Media Studies, a course sponsored by Stenhardt's Media, Culture, and Communication Department at New York University. Teaching commences in the autumn term (Sept-Dec 2024).

Course Description

This course introduces students to the study of contemporary forms of mediated communication. The syllabus covers key texts and ideas relevant to the history and theory of media in the 20th and 21st centuries. It will aim to demonstrate a small portion of the varieties of media theory and practice in different parts of the world. It will also argue for the extent to which ideas of freedom and control interplayed and clashed in ways that obscured perceptions of media technologies, and led to laws and policies that often did not do the work intended for them vis-à-vis media. The
course surveys the main topics in the field and introduces students to a variety of
analytical perspectives.

Upon completion of this course, students will understand:

  • some of the most important forces shaping modern history, all of which in one way or other, touch on questions of media and communication;
  • the economics of media production;
  • the impact of media on individual attitudes, values, and behaviors
  • the role of media professionals;
  • the impact of new media technologies

Expectation of Hours:

This is a 4-credit class, which calls for total contact hours equaling 35 hours. The semester is 15 weeks (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and there are 2.5 hours of classroom instruction each week. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute "office hour" at NYU London per week, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.

Teaching information:

Instructors are encouraged to use a variety of pedagogical techniques. This typically includes a combination of lecture- and discussion-based class sessions, as well as the use of student activities, such as debate exercises, flipped classroom environments, and experimental simulations.

In addition to required midterms and final exams, instructors may use a variety of assignments to assess student comprehension of the course material. These may include online weekly homework, writing assignments, short student presentations, and in-class multiple-choice quizzes. Instructors may select the mix that is more appropriate to their teaching methodology.

Instructors should be prepared to teach in-person and simultaneously to be prepared for remote instruction should circumstances require it. NYU uses Zoom as its primary platform for remote instruction.
