The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time ETS Tutors on the Gainesville campus. The UNG Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a year-long college preparatory program for first generation and/or low-income high school students attending Gainesville City Schools. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assists participants with the postsecondary application process. Educational Talent Search’s academic support services are designed to meet each student’s academic challenges by providing specialized tutoring and academic support to help in difficult academic areas (math, science, and literature/composition). After school academic support services are also a time for enrichment in college and career exploration, scholarship searches, and various after school workshops. The academic support services may be provided at Gainesville Middle School or Gainesville High School on a weekly basis, both during the school day and immediately after school. The implementation of virtual programming will be based on the health and safety of students/staff and school policy related to social distancing.

ETS Project tutors will work with Project advisors to provide math, science, and literature/composition tutoring for participants on a weekly basis and facilitate workshops at the assigned target school.   This is a temporary part-time non-exempt position that reports to the ETS Project Director.

  • Tutor students individually and in groups in math, science, and/or ELA; this may include workshops/presentations for participants.
  • Teach study skills that assist students in preparation for postsecondary education; supervise and assist students during study time.
  • Demonstrate a commitment, through mentoring, to assist first generation and economically disadvantaged students develop motivational skills necessary for success in college.
  • Assist with light office work and phone homes of students to make announcements; maintain accurate and timely records of student contact and maintain confidentiality; Assist in event set-up and clean up throughout the academic year
  • Facilitate 21st Century Employability Skills and STEM workshops
  • Inform Talent Search Advisors of any academic or disciplinary problems that impede tutorial progress.
  • Attend staff meetings and carry out any other duties as assigned by the staff.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Interpersonal skills, sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged, and commitment to the goals of the program. Intangible traits such as reliability, flexibility, effective communication, trustworthiness, motivation, leadership qualities, and a positive attitude.
  • At least 60 undergraduate credit hours completed.
  • Working with adolescents required.
  • Preference given to candidates with experience providing one-on-one tutoring and/or teaching high school students in one of the following areas: English, mathematics, science, history, or Spanish.
