Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years full-time experience in a higher education or public healthcare setting (student experience may be considered). Experience working with college students, high school students or young adults (student experience may be considered). Proficiency in public speaking. Experience with computer applications to include Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Workspace.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Public Health, Higher Education, Social Work or related field. Experience leading peer education programs, including curriculum development, training, and supervising peer educators.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Center for Prevention and Outreach is a dynamic team of public health professionals that utilize a data-driven and theory-based strategy to implement population-based, long-term changes in the community that reduce harm and cultivate a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. Through peer education, programming, workshops, and presentations, CPO offers students information and resources that empower them to make healthy decisions. In addition, CPO's work provides a network of care for students who may need support. The selected candidate should show a commitment to inclusion, cultural humility, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
The Prevention and Outreach Specialist in the Center for Prevention and Outreach will be responsible for providing students and the campus community with prevention, early intervention, education, and outreach services regarding public health issues affecting college students, such as but not limited to substance abuse, mental health, sexual and interpersonal violence, and general health.
The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided. This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.

Duties:

  • Coordinate Campus Wide Outreach: 
    • Efforts to educate the campus community about health and wellness and the various services provided through Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services. This includes but is not limited to Health and Wellness Fairs, Screening Days, Be Well Fest, opening programming, special awareness days or months, etc. 
    • Meaningful Fun - coordinate CPO’s Meaningful Fun initiatives including but not limited to our Healing Arts and Wellness Bar. This will include the creation of new programming when and where necessary to meet the health and wellness needs of the Stony Brook University community. 
  • Collaborate and Coordinate: 
    • Organizing PALS Events (Pet therapy program) based on institutional needs. 
    • Peer Education - as part of the CPO team, coordinate the recruitment, application, and on-boarding process for all peer educators. Oversee a cohort of peer educators focused on health and wellness outreach and/or targeted outreach based on the needs of the department and division. 
    • Bystander Intervention - assist in coordinating and conducting bystander intervention training for students, faculty and staff including but not limited to Red Watch Band, Green Dot, QPR, CPR and Narcan/Naloxone.
  • Social Media and Marketing: 
    • Contribute to the department’s social media presence by creating content when needed to address upcoming and prevalent health and wellness issues within the college student population. 
    • Data Gathering/Evaluation and Strategy Development - in collaboration with the CPO team, assist in preparing and maintaining registration forms for departmental programming, evaluate trends in attendance to help determine best use of resources. 
    • This position is based on Stony Brook University’s main (West) campus but will require occasional work/travel to the East (hospital) and Southampton campuses as the position serves all Stony Brook students. Travel to regional, state or national professional development opportunities and/or training may also be required at times.
  • Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.). Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
