Position Summary
Austin Peay State University invites applications for a one-year instructor position with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the APSU Orchestra and teach other courses within the department according to the candidate’s qualifications and the department’s needs. This is a 9-month full-time instructor position commencing August 1, 2024. Salary is commensurate with experience and education.
The Department of Music at Austin Peay State University, an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, enjoys a vital presence on campus, in the Clarksville community, and in the region. The Department boasts a nationally recognized and acoustically superior concert hall, along with outstanding performance, practice, rehearsal, and studio spaces. The Department of Music is an integral member of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA https://apsu.edu/ceca/). A long-established state-funded initiative, CECA is designed to enhance the cultural environment of the university, community, and region through a diverse range of imaginative arts experiences.
The following degrees are offered: Bachelor of Music with concentrations in Performance, Music Education, Composition, and Music Therapy; Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Music; Master of Music with concentrations in Music Education, Performance, Collaborative Piano, Instrumental Conducting, and Choral Conducting.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 170,957 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
  • Direct the APSU Symphony Orchestra in all rehearsals and performances
  • Teach courses, which may include but are not limited to: Conducting, Music Theory, Ear Training, Symphonic Literature, Orchestration, Chamber Music Literature, Introduction to Music, etc.
  • Actively recruit for the Music Department
  • Collaborate with the other areas in the Music Department, with other departments across campus, and with area musicians and music educators to include the region’s high school teachers and private string teachers
  • Build and maintain positive and professional relationships with the region’s high school music teachers and students
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to coordinate the organization of an ensemble, including inventory, score library, and budget
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate level orchestral repertoire along with a vision for 21st-century programming
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated commitment to a collegial and inclusive environment
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence as an educator
Physical Requirements
  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work mornings and/or late nights
  • Ability to lift to 30 pounds (instruments, equipment, etc.)
Required Minimum Qualifications
Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in music
  • Demonstrated experience as an orchestral conductor
  • Commitment to diversity
  • A background search will be required of the successful applicant

Preferred Qualifications (above the minimum):
  • Earned doctorate in conducting
  • Significant orchestral conducting experience
  • Collegiate teaching experience
  • Strong record of recruiting
