Perform the duties of an ophthalmic technician as well as:

  • Perform ophthalmic test and procedures with proficiency in the ophthalmic sub-specialties.
  • Coordinate follow-up care of patients.
  • Assist in training and coordinating the work of ophthalmic assistants and technicians and interns.
  • Participate in research studies.
  • Actively assist in clinic workflow, scheduling of technicians, communicating delays to patients.
  • Onboarding of new employees.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Provide exceptional patient service.
  • Assist in clinical procedures.
  • Graduation from high school 
  • Experience as an ophthalmic technician (at least 2 years, at least COA or equivalent)
  • Commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the research volunteer
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Uncompromising integrity
  • Capacity and willingness to learn new skills as the positional needs change
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with computer keyboards and applicable software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook or equivalent)

Senior Level

  • Certified as Ophthalmic Technician through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required. 
  • Considerable experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.

Intermediate Level

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Asst from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required.  
  • Reasonable experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required.

Associate Level

  • Completion of Michigan Medicine's 12-week training program or some experience as an Ophthalmic Technician is required. 
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Asst within one year of employment.
  • Experience with the MiChart (Epic) electronic health record (EHR) system
  • Experience with the OnCore clinical trial management system (CTMS)
  • At least two years of college with courses in the health science area is strongly preferred

Senior Level

  • Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician is desired. 

Intermediate Level

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician is desired. 

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
