Job Summary

The UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) is a multi-year, transdisciplinary research effort to reduce the burden of prematurity among those at highest risk for preterm birth—women and birthing people of color. PTBi brings together academic researchers from different disciplines, healthcare providers, departments of public health, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to work in partnership with affected communities. Most importantly, PTBi partners with women and birthing people with lived experience during all phases of the research including developing and prioritizing the research agenda, enhancing study designs to ensure cultural appropriateness and maximum impact, and ensuring dissemination of results to a broad audience of stakeholders.
The UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative is currently seeking an Operations Manager. The Operations Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of the operations of PTBi. The Operations Manager will manage and implement a range of operations and project management deliverables for PTBi, which will be informed through a race equity and community-centered lens. They will supervise two members of the Operations team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for program planning with operational needs, researching
organizational structures, policies and procedures to create and manage standard operating procedures for the initiative. They may also assist with strategic planning and sustainability efforts.
The Operations Manager receives general direction from the Associate Director in the form of objectives with deadline driven goals. The specific responsibilities and duties that this position will be expected to perform are as follows:
• Provide high level project management, administrative and training support for the PTBi-CA operation team.
• Work in partnership with the PTBi-CA leadership team to build standard operating procedures for the initiative.
The successful candidate must have the ability to balance numerous deadlines and shifting priorities. They may have the ability to work independently and exercise sound, evidence-based decision making when needed. It will also be critical for the candidate to have experience working with academic faculty, staff members, community members, consultants and external stakeholders, including a variety of suppliers. The ideal candidate is passionate about racial equity and birth justice. This position will be a critical part of a multicultural, anti-racist organization that works to address racial disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes, with a particular focus on addressing anti-Blackness.

Department Description

The California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC) is a recognized leader in training and health-provider workforce capacity building. Since 1989, CAPTC has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as other State and National funders to deliver high-quality, state-of-the-art training and technical assistance to health professionals and health care organizations related to STD prevention, diagnosis and treatment. CAPTC has established an innovative, cost-effective training and technical assistance center with expertise in training providers, providing training and capacity building to CDC-funded STD programs, training disease investigation specialists, and building health department capacity. CAPTC is part of
the Bixby Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of OB/Gyn & RS, SFGH Division, and has faculty with national-level expertise in STDs and HIV.

Disease intervention is key to sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention and control. Highly trained staff known as disease intervention specialists (DIS) are at the forefront of disease intervention work as they are public health professionals responsible for finding and counseling people with sexually transmitted or other infectious diseases and their contacts. While DIS primarily work with STDs, they also lend their expertise during urgent outbreak situations. DIS have been used in several public health responses from Tuberculosis to COVID- 19.

Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences.
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences (ObGyn & RS) is a major academic department in the School of Medicine committed to providing quality health care services, educating health care providers and investigators, and conducting research to advance knowledge in our field. The Department is nationally recognized for research and training in women’s health care specialties. This position is based at the Department’s San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) Division, a large teaching, research, and clinical site. The
SFGH Division of Ob-Gyn & RS is home to ~40 faculty, 8 non-faculty academics, and 110 staff; fellows, residents, and other trainees; and the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. The SFGH division has an annual budget of over $70M. Our mission in the SFGH Division of Ob-Gyn & RS is to promote justice, quality, and equity in women's health care. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, public policy, psychology, sociology or related area and/or equivalent experience / training
  • 3+ years of experience in program coordination, operations and community engagement or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application
  • programs, including Microsoft 365, RedCap and ability to learn CRM database management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
  • Strong policy analysis techniques
  • Strong project management skills
  • Demonstrated skills in providing full operational, coordination and project support

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong familiarity with UC policies and procedures and compliance rules and regulations
