Position Summary | This position is for a tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in collaboration with the Marsico Lung Institute (MLI). Biomedical Engineering is a supportive and collaborative environment, and we welcome candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Our mission is to improve human quality of life, personal and work environments, and rehabilitation products and processes through careful study, analysis, research, and design of innovative technologies to benefit the people of North Carolina, and others whom we serve. The Marsico Lung Institute (MLI) is a multidisciplinary research institute in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Specific areas of research within MLI include genetics, mucus biochemistry and biophysics, cell biology, pharmacology, ion transport, animal model system, microbiology, transplantation biology, and translational therapeutics. The current position has been created to investigate critical features of the protective airway surface layer that lines the respiratory tract and serves as the first line of defense against inhaled pathogens. The MLI / Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks to greatly improve our understanding of the function of this layer in both health and a spectrum of muco-obstructive pulmonary diseases such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, primary ciliary dyskinesia, non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma. We seek outstanding candidates conducting research in the areas of: (1) Mucus Biophysics, (2) Mucin Biochemistry, (3) Motile Cilia Dynamics, and (4) Mucus layer / Bacterial Biofilm Interactions. Competitive candidates in other areas related areas of biomedical engineering will also be considered. Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program or will have otherwise demonstrated the clear potential to do so. The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with basic researchers across BME / MLI and with clinical investigators in support of translational research projects within the MLI. The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at the Marsico Lung Institute at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with tenure home in the School of Medicine |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Qualified candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Biochemistry, or related area, and have demonstrated excellent capability for scholarly activity. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Prefer candidates to be able to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, with the possibility of teaching classes in the areas of biological physics, controls, biomedical instrumentation, fluid mechanics, physiology, or related classes. |
