Position Description Summary:
The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health of the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health invites applications for a tenure track, open rank, faculty position, starting as early as May 1st, 2024. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.
We invite applications from a variety of disciplines related to the public health implications of environmental and/or occupational hazards that could include: climate change (including heat, extreme weather, water-borne disease, vector-borne disease, food security and safety); water, sanitation, and health; chemical or microbial exposures; and indoor and/or ambient air pollution. We are particularly interested in laboratory-based research but interdisciplinary research approaches are welcome. We welcome applicants experienced in studying exposures and/or health outcomes in vulnerable populations in low resource settings globally and/or in communities disproportionately affected by environmental pollution and related hazards. The Milken Institute School of Public Health has a diverse faculty and a rapidly growing research portfolio. As the only school of public health in the nation’s capital, faculty and students have a unique opportunity to work closely with government agencies as well as the numerous non-governmental and international organizations that are headquartered in DC. The School of Public Health has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the LEED Gold certified Science and Engineering Hall and world class high-performance computing infrastructure. GW is also home to a thriving ecosystem of centers and institutes in areas related to environmental health, including the Climate and Health Institute, Antibiotic Resistance Action Center, Sustainable GW, Food and Health Policy Institute, Global Food Institute, and the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness. The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health offers several degree programs, including MPH programs in Environmental Health Science & Policy and in Global Environmental Health, MPH concentration in Climate and Health, and PhD in Environmental Health.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities for the position include an active role in environmental health research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will bring or develop an externally funded research portfolio and devote 50% effort to this research and 50% to teaching, service, and mentoring students.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have a terminal degree as well as demonstrated evidence of training or work in public health (e.g. via coursework, post-doctoral training, job training, and/or work experience). They must have demonstrated experience in a relevant discipline such as environmental health, epidemiology, global health, microbiology, environmental engineering, or relevant social sciences. In addition, experience teaching and mentoring students is required. Applicants must have a solid publication record and have demonstrated the ability to obtain extramural research funding (Associate Professor or Professor applicants) or have demonstrated potential for obtaining extramural research funding and for publishing in the peer reviewed literature (Assistant Professor applicants).
