About the Department | The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive, and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions. |
Essential Job Duties | A successful candidate should have a vision for running and designing a cybersecurity education program as well as provide evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level, leadership in curricular innovation, an interest in CS educational scholarship, and a desire to collaborate with SCI faculty on education and research efforts. Primary responsibilities will include (1) overseeing and expanding cybersecurity education programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels; (2) teaching graduate and undergraduate Computer Science courses on cybersecurity; and (3) writing proposals for and leading sponsored innovative cybersecurity education initiatives. Overseeing the Cybersecurity Education Program: The Director will work as a peer of the SCI Director of Cybersecurity Practice aiding in the identification, recruitment, and review of instructors for short courses, mentors for capstone student projects, placement for student internships and full time positions.The Director will manage an NSF CyberCorpsⓇ Scholarship for Service program. The Director will be expected to be highly engaged with students, building on existing student group initiatives and developing new opportunities for students. Expanding the Cybersecurity Education Program: The Director will lead and expand education initiatives of the Department of Computer Science and the NC-Partnership for Cybersecurity Excellence (NC-PaCE – https://nc-pace.org ). NC-PaCE is a coalition of ten of North Carolina’s universities, colleges, and community colleges led by SCI. NC-PaCE works with public agencies and private-sector businesses to address a growing workforce gap and to establish cybersecurity as an economic development tool for the state through education, research, services, and outreach. The Director will lead the effort to receive a CAE-CD designation for the BS in Computer Science Cybersecurity Concentration and explore pathways and degree programs that support CSC and NC State growth expectations. Teaching Cybersecurity Courses: The Director will be a member of the Teaching Faculty in the Department of Computer Science and is expected to teach Computer Science courses on cybersecurity both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with an initial focus on undergraduate courses. Offerings may include continuing cybersecurity education to professionals. In addition to the Teaching Professional Faculty nine month salary, there will be an administrative supplement to serve as the Director of Cybersecurity Education. The Director of Cybersecurity Education administrative supplement will be equivalent to one and a half months of the nine month Teaching Professional Faculty salary + $10,000. The anticipated hiring range is $120,000 – $150,000 which includes both the nine month Faculty Salary and administrative supplement as Director of Cybersecurity Education. The administrative supplement as Director of Cybersecurity Education will be in effect as long as the final candidate is in this additional role. If the final candidate is no longer the Director of Cybersecurity Education, then the additional compensation will be removed and only the Teaching Professional Faculty nine month salary would continue. Teaching Faculty, as Professional Faculty, are full members of the Department and have a promotion path from Assistant Teaching Professor to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor. Teaching Faculty are highly valued colleagues and contribute to the Department through activities like coordination of courses, participation in the Strategic Planning Committee, ABET accreditation, and other departmental leadership, like the Director of Cybersecurity Education. The Department supports the engagement of Teaching Faculty with the larger community. As professional faculty, the Director of Cybersecurity Education and Teaching Faculty are not eligible for consideration or conferral of permanent tenure. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience | Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related area along with appropriate experience by their start date. The position will exist within the Department of Computer Science and work closely with the Secure Computing Institute (SCI).
