HAI Postdoctoral Fellow: Socially Augmented Learning Technologies (SALT) Lab, Professor Roy Pea
As AI has become integrated into children’s everyday smart devices, sophisticated algorithms analyze children's data to evaluate personal characteristics, shaping children's online experiences and the learning ecologies of their lives by making consequential decisions for them, thus etching pathways for their futures. This postdoctoral fellowship research will be directed toward augmenting the agency and critical algorithmic literacies of children when utilizing AI-laden technologies. The fellow will be an integral part of the Socially Augmented Learning Technologies (SALT) Lab, with focus on developing effective strategies to educate and empower diverse children and their caretakers for competently navigating and managing the impacts of AI-driven applications in their lives. The initiative will contribute to the ‘24 HAI Wellbeing priority area by advancing our understanding of children’s algorithmic agency and of design strategies for developing AI systems which respect children’s values and best interests while promoting their agency in interactions with algorithmic decision-making. These interactions can profoundly influence a child's sense of self, decision-making, and their social development, so our approach is designed to foster a healthy, balanced relationship with technology. We will collaboratively develop resources, tools, and support systems for empowering children to engage thoughtfully and effectively with AI technologies.
Mentorship Structure
The postdoctoral fellow will be mentored by Professor Roy Pea, Director of SALT Lab.
Stanford HAI is also committed to creating a diverse community of scholars who are engaged in contributing to the understanding and advancement of Human-Centered AI. Postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to engage with one another and with the broader Stanford HAI research community. They are also expected to participate in professional development, cohort-building, and other programmatic activities organized by HAI.
Evaluation Criteria
Match of ongoing research to initiative description, and the quality of HAI-related scholarship and research publications.
