Job Summary

OpenDP is an open-source initiative for building libraries, tools, and systems to share and analyze sensitive data with the strong mathematical protections of differential privacy.  It has a rapidly growing community that spans academia, industry, and government. The OpenDP Strategic Community Engagement Manager will report to the Program Director and work closely with the faculty directors, the executive committee, and the software development team in community outreach, engagement, governance, diversity, and inclusion.

This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.


Position Description

  • Formulate and execute a diversity, equity, and inclusion plan for the OpenDP Community, including measuring, improving, and reporting on DEI metrics. 
  • Design and execute an outreach strategy for OpenDP, engaging and incentivizing stakeholders, including users, contributors, and funders from academia, industry, and government.  Assist in exploring long-term sustainability models for OpenDP. 
  • Deliver programming and oversee the organization of virtual and in-person events for the OpenDP community, including community meetings, workshops, hackathons, and webinars. Evaluate and update programming as needed.
  • Identify, assign, and support leaders of community working groups leading into and coming out of community meetings.  
  • Develop and execute a matrix communication plan based on content, audience and channels. 
  • Sustain an effective online presence, including websites, social media, public calendars, mailing lists, Slack, and other channels.
  • Maintain a repository of key project activities and accomplishments for communications and mandatory reporting.
  • Partner with friend organizations in message amplification. 
  • Assign tasks to the Community Coordinator for event organization and communications as needed.  
  • Foster collaborations with and among the community and promote OpenDP at community events and trade shows. Working closely with the technical owner of OpenDP use cases, act as the business point of contact throughout the use case lifecycle.
  • In collaboration with the software team, improve the onboarding and feedback processes for contributors and users to engage and stay involved with OpenDP: facilitate community learning and training in both differential privacy and the specifics of OpenDP; solicit community feedback to incorporate into the OpenDP roadmap.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of administrative work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Exposure to and interest in learning more about differential privacy is desired.
  • Experience and interest in working with open-source projects and communities is desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and empathy, valuing diversity and working with communities is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications content creation is desired. 
  • Background in tech industry and working with academic research groups is desired.

Additional Information

  • The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences does not provide visa sponsorship for administrative and staff positions.
  • This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of extension. 
  • This position will be based in Allston, MA. The department is currently operating with a hybrid workplace model. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
  • This position currently allows the flexibility to be based on campus, fully remote, partially remote, or hybrid, and may adjust this flexibility as necessary or appropriate.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
