About the Department
 

The Forum for Digital Culture in the Division of the Humanities is the center and meeting place for digital arts and humanities at the University of Chicago. Its staff are engaged in (1) teaching graduate and undergraduate students, (2) computational research support for faculty and student projects, and (3) public outreach and engagement. In the area of teaching, the Forum for Digital Culture administers and offers courses for a one-year M.A., a two-year research-intensive M.A., a joint B.A./M.A., an undergraduate minor, and a graduate certificate for Ph.D. students, as well as non-credit tutorials on digital tools and skills relevant to the arts and humanities. These programs are grouped under the heading Digital Studies of Language, Culture, and History. In the area of computational research support, the staff of the Forum provide consultation, training, software, and data management for faculty and student projects and also administer and maintain an Online Publication Service for acquiring and publishing digital materials created by scholars in a peer-reviewed, open-access, and permanently accessible form. In the area of public engagement, the Forum for Digital Culture hosts lectures, conferences, exhibitions, and other events.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Director of Online Publications, the Online Publication Service Editor performs editorial tasks related to the digital publications in UChicago Online Publication Service series; promotes the use of the Online Publication Service to faculty and researchers at the University of Chicago and elsewhere; teaches or assists teaching one or two Digital Studies courses per year; represents the Online Publication Service through public presentations and through print and digital advertising; and other tasks as assigned by the Director of Online Publications.

Responsibilities

  • Performs editorial tasks related to the digital publications in UChicago Online Publication Service series.
  • Collaborates closely with the Director of Online Publications, the Director of Technology of the Forum for Digital Culture and other Forum staff to achieve OPS goals.
  • Communicates with OPS authors throughout the editorial process.
  • Adheres to data modeling and publication standards established by the OPS.
  • Cleans existing tabular, textual, and other data to remove errors and inconsistency.
  • Assists authors in migrating or entering publication data into the OCHRE core database.
  • Works closely with Forum Software Engineers to implement the web delivery of OPS publications.
  • Promotes the use of the Online Publication Service to faculty and researchers at the University of Chicago and elsewhere.
  • Meets with researchers to discuss the appropriateness of OPS for publishing their digital research.
  • Participates in conferences, workshops, forums, symposiums, and other events to represent the OPS.
  • Represents the Online Publication Service through public presentation and through print and digital advertising.
  • Creates marketing materials for the OPS and for specific publications.
  • Composes publication advertisements and announcements.
  • Contributes content to the OPS website.
  • Teaches or assists teaching one or two digital studies courses per year (normally DIGS 20003/30003, Data Management for the Humanities and DIGS 20005/30005, Data Publication for the Humanities).
  • May perform their own computational research, attend academic conferences, author or co-author academic publications, and/or serve as a PI or co-PI on a funded project in collaboration with relevant UChicago faculty, subject to approval by the Faculty Director.
  • Checks typeset proofs before author review. Reviews typeset proofs or revised written copy returned by authors and approves or rejects changes. Enters author changes as appropriate and checks typeset pages.
  • Coordinate all stages of manuscript editing and proof review up to the time the book is bound and edit and approve catalog and jacket materials with guidance from others.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the humanities or social sciences.
  • PhD.

Experience:

  • Performing computational tasks and/or training for one or more humanities research projects, including but not limited to textual, philological, linguistic, and literary projects.
  • Managing and organizing digital files such as images, maps, audio and video files.
  • Research experience in a humanities or social sciences domain in one of the following fields: art history, archaeology, cinema and media studies, history, linguistics, literary studies, musicology, or similar.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Work with specialized software employed in research in the humanities, including non-relational database systems, ontology tools, data cleaning tools, and XML editing and authoring applications.
  • Work with metadata standards such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, etc.; familiarity with the TEI guideline is an advantage.
  • Contribute productively to the implementation of web publication software and strategies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Preferred Competencies

  • Juggle multiple and complex projects simultaneously to meet deadlines; set and meet research project deadlines.
