Position Description:

The Occupational Safety Specialist III  (Industrial Hygiene Specialist) works under the direction of the Occupational Health and Safety Manager to develop, implement, and maintain a university-wide industrial hygiene programs such as indoor air quality, exposure to hazardous environments, ergonomics, and noise exposure. Typical work includes the investigation of stakeholder concerns, collection of data through use of analytical equipment, writing of professional reports, and implementation of hazard controls. This position also assists in the delivery of training, drafting of new policies and procedures, and collaborating with stakeholders and other internal DEHS teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform various industrial hygiene tasks including, but not limited to; indoor air quality studies, noise surveys, exposure monitoring, and workplace ergonomic evaluations.
  • Investigate Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) complaints utilizing standard methods and ensure the timely resolution of concerns.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and control working conditions that may cause illness or impair the health of workers.
  • Maintain the chemical fume hood inspection program on all campuses.
  • Participate in or lead incident investigations for injuries or illnesses related to occupational exposures.
  • Maintain industrial hygiene equipment and provide justification for new equipment needs.
  • Review construction and renovation activities as they relate to industrial hygiene. Provide guidance regarding compliance with applicable federal, state, and local codes.
  • Participate on laboratory assessment team and safety committees as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other DEHS groups on projects with industrial hygiene crossover.
  • Develop policy and procedural documents intended to address existing and emerging exposures to chemicals, noise, ergonomics, and other hazardous environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Experience in research or higher education
  • Other safety related certification (CSP, SMS, ASP, GSP, CHMM)
  • Advanced degree in related field
  • Experience in research or higher education and familiarity with OSHA Lab Standard
  • Asbestos Abatement Supervisor, Lead Paint Certification
