Department Summary
The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas is a Tier 1 Research Institution with over 100 Biological Research Laboratories and a fast-growing Biomedical Engineering Department housed in a newly built state of the art facility. UNT has an enrollment of close to 47,000 students with 185 buildings and 12 residence halls on 900 acres. Risk Management Services’ programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational, and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. We help identify, analyze, and mitigate risks to prevent loss and provide a safe and healthy campus environment so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement. To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges, and work through any issues that occur.
Position Overview

This position is responsible for combining professional judgment and technical expertise to identify, analyze and control hazards to ensure the health safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors on the UNT campus. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, indoor air quality monitoring and compliance issues, work noise evaluations, respirator fit testing, mold consulting, ergonomic evaluations, safety programs for industrial and manufacturing environments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and four years of experience in industrial hygiene safety inspections and emergency response; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong oral and written communication skills; supervisory skills.
• Ability to substantiate results from reports using spreadsheets and analysis.
• Ability to provide emergency response within 30 minutes when scheduled.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations relating to area of assignment.
• Extensive working knowledge of building construction and layout and ability to read blueprints, schematic drawings, etc. and determine sites for inspection.

Job Duties


o

Implementation and oversight of UNT’s campus health and safety program. Ensures internal related policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to. Collaborates with UNT Facilities and UNT System Facilities personnel. Manages partnerships among RMS, multiple campus departments, and external agencies to enhance UNT’s industrial hygiene program.

o

Conducts indoor air quality assessments proactively and in response to employee and student concerns. Conducts routine HVAC system inspections of campus buildings. Provides mold assessment consultation. Provides written documentation of indoor air quality responses.

o

Ensures safety processes and programs are in place for facilities and academia operations. Ensures safety programs are in place at Discovery Park to protect students in industrial/manufacturing environments.

o

Conducts respirator fit testing in compliance with the Respiratory Protection Program Plan. Perform noise-level assessments as needed for UNT and Discovery Park campuses. Perform workstation ergonomic surveys as requested.

o

Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments. Performs calibration and routine testing and ensures instruments have recommended O&M, annual manufacture calibrations, and needed repairs.

o

Leads and manages multiple operations; demonstrates the ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously. Capable of working side-by-side with faculty, staff, students, compliance, legal and regulatory agencies. Conveys information and produces reports based on audience and level of detail needed.

o

Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence; capable of building and maintaining strong working relationships, understanding various perspective to complex problems. Demonstrates the ability to understand the scope of university operations, identify and assess exposures involving industrial hygiene activities resulting from these operations.

o

Supports UNT Risk Management’s overall scope of operations through risk identification, risk analysis, risk control, and risk administration. Demonstrates a high tolerance for ambiguity and is capable of working under considerable pressure; able to balance multiple projects and demands.

o

Develops and maintains IAQ Management Plan, Respirator Protection Plan, and Hearing Conservation Program. Develops and maintains the industrial hygiene program standard operation procedures.
