Job Summary

The Pediatric Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner delivers comprehensive healthcare under the clinical supervision of the Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital –Oakland/San Francisco and under the administrative supervision of the Director of Pediatric Critical Care at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital – San Francisco. The NP will collaborate with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of providers to care for patients in the Pediatric Cardiac Transitional Care Unit and in all inpatient areas that care for pediatric cardiothoracic surgery patients. Care is also provided in the outpatient clinic, via telehealth, and potentially in the operating room (depending on departmental need, experience, and interest). In the clinic and inpatient areas, they're responsible for assessment, evaluation, planning, teaching, and case management of preoperative and postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients. They primarily work at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital – San Francisco campus and may cross train to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital – Oakland campus or other facilities where our Pediatric Cardiothoracic surgeons operate.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • One (1) year of Nurse Practitioner experience with pediatric cardiac patients.
  • Internal candidates only:  more than 2 years of experience in the practice setting and completion of Family Nurse Practitioner or Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification 
  • Master’s degree in Nursing with a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specialization.
  • Completion of an accredited Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification.  
  • Demonstrated competence in communication, collaboration, clinical case management, leadership, problem identification and resolution, teaching and research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years NP experience with pediatric cardiac patients.
  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Certification as an RNFA
  • Previous OR experience

License/Certification

  • California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work. 
  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
  • Must hold current AHA PALS as minimum requirement
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice 
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
