Job Summary

The Division of Geriatrics seeks a per diem Nurse Practitioner to support the Age-Friendly Geriatrics Emergency Department (AFED) consult service.  UCSF is engaged in creating an Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS), this position requires optimizing the care of older adults in the emergency department setting when consults are requested by ED providers.  Clinical work involves providing consult services from Geriatrics to the ED by completing structured assessments, patient exam, and making recommendations to the ED and Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) for ongoing care/ home management as indicated.  Works in coordination with pharmacists, ED providers, geriatricians, social workers, community-based providers, and other interdisciplinary professionals and/or services to create an optimal discharge or ongoing plan of care for the patient.  The NP works collaboratively with the geriatricians in the Division of Geriatrics that are identified on scheduled shifts, and with the ED faculty overseeing the external funds. 

The position does not involve direct clinical management of patients in the emergency department. 

Commitment to work at least 4 shifts per month and all shifts are 8 hours and the service requires onsite clinical coverage 7 days per week.

Our ideal candidate is an nurse practitioner who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills, and experience necessary to provide expert advanced nursing care in the geriatric specialty.  They will be guided and follow the policies and standardized procedures, rules and regulations, requirement of supervision under CA statute, and bylaws of the UCSF Health, some Nursing, Medical Staff, and any unique policies related to the provision of patient services. In California, nurse practitioners (APRNs) can practice, bill, and provide independent health care services under a standardized procedure in collaboration with a supervising physician.

The Division of Geriatrics’ work is grounded in a deep commitment to and respect for older persons. We are specialists in aging. Our expertise is in optimizing the health of older individuals. We work in the community and on virtually every UCSF campus – Parnassus, San Francisco VA Health Care System, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Mission Bay, and UCSF Center for Geriatric Care. Required Qualifications

  • Minimum two (2) years of adult primary care or acute care practice experience as a nurse practitioner  in a diverse patient population.
  • Experience in requesting or providing consultative services.
  • Experience with clinical documentation in an electronic health record.
  • More than one (1) year experience providing direct geriatric patient care as part of clinical experience.
  • Able to interpret tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Able to adhere to all policies and procedures of UCSF Health in terms of HIPPA/Communication/Privacy/Code of Conduct, and any other UCSF or Med Center Policies, which includes meeting the encounter closure requirements of the Med Staff Bylaws.
  • Flexibility to work at all UCSF Health licensed facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice.
  • Geriatrics experience inpatient or outpatient.
  • Experience in precepting NP students.
  • Ability to qualify as UCSF Health trusted interpreter in Spanish.
  • Experience using EPIC.

License/Certification

  • California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.    
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.   
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
