DISC is seeking a skilled and experienced Physical Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working with researchers with innovative ideas to design, develop, and build mechanical components, equipment, and physical prototypes. This role requires a strong background in mechanical engineering and/or technology, hands-on experience in prototype development, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities:

  •      Prototype Development:  Design, build, and test mechanical and physical prototypes based on project requirements. Assists in the development of project requirements and specifications, including costing, lead times and alternative solutions. Utilize CAD software and other design tools to create detailed and accurate schematics, Alpha/Beta Designs, and translating hand drawings to CAD.
  •      Materials Selection and Testing: Develops specifications for the selection, application, and installation of prototypes. Conduct material testing and analysis to ensure prototypes meet performance and safety standards.
  •      Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, to understand project goals and requirements.  Collaborate with external vendors and partners to source materials and components.
  •      Quality Assurance/Quality Control: Develop and implement quality assurance/quality control procedures for developed prototype testing. Identify and troubleshoot any operating or installation issues or defects in the prototypes and recommend solutions.
  •      Documentation:  Maintain accurate and detailed documentation throughout the prototype development process. Create reports summarizing prototype performance, testing results, and any modifications made. Assists in the preparation of documentation for new budget requirements and overall project cost estimate.  Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in prototype development.  Propose and implement improvements to the prototype development process.
 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor's degree, AND: 

  • 36 months in mechanical engineering work or military experience. 

Equivalency Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 84 months of related experience.

Skills: 

  •       Proven experience in designing and building mechanical prototypes.
  •       Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other relevant design tools.
  •       Strong knowledge of materials science and experience in material testing.
  •       Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced math skills

  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics, or technical manuals
  •       Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  •       Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  •       Familiarity with manufacturing processes and rapid prototyping techniques.  

Certifications or Licenses:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Registration as Professional Engineer or ability to obtain license within six months of employment

Department Preference:

  •       Master's degree
  •       Experience with 3D printing and other rapid prototyping technologies.
  •       Knowledge of simulation tools for mechanical analysis.
  •       Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations.
  •       Project management skills.

Working Conditions: 

  •        Ability to engage in repetitive motion. Lift up to 50 lbs.
  •        Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and odors.
