Detailed Job Description

The MSSE program is looking to fill a Non-Tenure Track lecturer position. The primary purpose of this position is to teach courses, mentor students in the program and supervise student teachers in the field. The goal is to prepare students to become teachers of deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the elementary, middle and secondary level. This is a non-tenure track position. This position will start August 14, 2024.

Major Accountabilities

  • Teach courses within one’s expertise
  • Supervise and Evaluate Student Teachers during their Student Teaching experiences.
  • Mentor students throughout the program regarding professional dispositions, instructional strategies, classroom management, and social emotional needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Assist the program in writing grant proposals and scholarly activities.
  • Participate in department, college, and university committees and activities
  • Participate in professional organizations and professional development activities regarding teacher education and supervision
  • Participate in diversity and communication work for the university.
  • Collaborate with RIT/NTID faculty and staff on special projects occasionally when applicable.

The MS program in Secondary Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is designed for students to earn dual certification to teach a secondary school content area for students who are hearing or deaf as well as in deaf education for grades K-12. The curriculum is taught by renowned faculty at RIT—one of the most innovative campuses in the world—serving more than 1,100 deaf and hard-of-hearing students.


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned master’s degree in education of the deaf or relevant field.
  • Certification in teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing K-12 students.
  • Additional certification in a content area, grades 7-12 is preferred.
  • Prior experience teaching deaf and hard of hearing students at the primary, secondary or postsecondary level is required.
  • Prior experience as a cooperating teacher or university supervisor or related experience is preferred.
  • Additional expertise and interest in one or more of the following areas: language development of deaf people, educational change, curriculum studies, history and philosophy of education, cognition, theories of teaching and learning, and history/legal aspects of the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Demonstrated proficiency in sign language and knowledge of Deaf culture, and be able to teach directly in ASL is required due to the direct instruction in the MSSE program courses.
