Summary of Position
The University of New Hampshire Kiwiberry Breeding and Development Program at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES) is hiring a full time, benefitted Vineyard Manager to lead its field and greenhouse operations. Due to the fluctuating seasonal nature of the workload for the kiwiberry program, roughly 25% of the manager’s time will be dedicated to assisting with other horticultural research projects at the NHAES, as needed.
Essential Job Duties
75% — Working in conjunction with the kiwiberry program’s Principal Investigator (PI), affiliated reseachers, and relevant NHAES management, the Vineyard Manager is responsible for:
  • Performing all tasks related to the establishment, management, and decommissioning of vines in the program’s kiwiberry vineyards at the NHAES Woodman Horticultural Farm;
  • Performing all tasks related to the harvest, post-harvest handling, distribution, and disposal of the kiwiberries produced at the NHAES Woodman Horticultural Farm;
  • Performing all tasks related to the establishment, management, and decommissioning of vines in the NHAES McFarlane Greenhouse Facilities, including propagation by seeds and rooted cuttings;
  • Carrying out timely applications of irrigation, fertilization, light, and pruning/trellising regimes in both the field and the greenhouse, as well as the design and maintenance of all associated systems;
  • Operating of a wide variety of agricultural equipment to prepare fields, apply experimental treatments, and harvest crops;
  • Maintaining all non-laboratory equipment and program infrastructure required for the proper operation of the UNH Kiwiberry Breeding and Development Program;
  • Assisting the PI and associated students and staff with research, including the implementation of experimental treatments, accurate data collection, and vine selection/culling;
  • Assisting the PI in communicating the work of the program to visitors and regional stakeholders;
  • Directing student, hourly, and volunteer support labor related to the program’s field and greenhouse operations;
  • Communicating clearly with the PI to develop and confirm weekly workplans.

25% — Working in conjunction with the relevant NHAES PIs, affiliated reseachers, and relevant NHAES management, the Vineyard Manager is responsible for:
  • Assisting the PIs and associated students and staff with research, including the implementation of experimental treatments, maintenance of experimental materials, and accurate data collection.
  • Communicating clearly with the PIs to develop and confirm timely workplans.
  • Performing in a professional and timely manner all research-related tasks (field, greenhouse, and/or lab) set forth in the agreed upon workplans.

Training/Education
In addition to holding a four-year college degree, applicants must have at least two years of relevant horticultural experience. Working knowledge of horticultural production may be demonstrated via past work experience, personal background, and/or holding an MS degree with applied research experience in a related discipline (e.g. Horticulture, Plant Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Physiology, etc.).
Skills
  • Must be highly organized and able to effectively prioritize multiple competing time-sensitive tasks
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to work effectively with a wide variety of people, including students, scientists, NHAES staff, and the broader public.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a routine basis, work long hours on feet, work outside in all seasons, work for long periods alone, and operate farm machinery.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow Standard Operating Procedures and research protocols, including the accurate collection and digitization of data.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be competent in the use of MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint.
