Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The purpose of the position is to advise undergraduates on degree requirements, academic planning, academic policies, course selection, experiential learning opportunities, academic audits and degree clearances, graduate study and career planning, and referrals to a wide range of campus services. There will be significant involvement in orientation, and admission activities as well as informational events. Other duties include teaching a Neuroscience section of the college’s freshman seminar: CMNS100, maintaining advising records, auditing, managing social media and other outreach, scheduling and commencement.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • A bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • 1-2 years professional experience in a higher education setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in developing and maintaining supportive relationships with students, coworkers, administrators and faculty members.
  • Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, organizational and multitasking skills are essential.
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Experience as an undergraduate academic advisor working with diverse populations.
  • Experience as an undergraduate academic advisor working at a 4-year university.
  • A master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience with the academic requirements and administrative policies of the University of Maryland, and campus. technologies (e.g., AOW, U. Achieve, SIS, TerpEngage or Salesforce, Canvas, Qualtrics).
  • Teaching experience.
  • Basic programing and web design experience encouraged.

Physical Demands
Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Lifting boxes of materials for events may also be required.
