Position Focus:

Working under the direction of the Director of the Neurology Outpatient Clinic, this position will provide direct nursing care in the Neurology clinic according to established procedures, protocols and scope of nursing practice care standards.

Directs patient care activities by interpreting and implementing University and health care policies and standards. Under the direction of EMU attendings, coordinate inpatient admissions for overnight testing. Will perform physical assessments of patients, including triage duties and advise on treatment or course of action by having knowledge of nursing care standards and principles. Develops, implements, and manages nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians. Interview patients and records medical history to establish data for treatment plan, plan and send requests for admission and discharge of patients. Instructs patients and families in proper treatment and advises patients on health maintenance and disease prevention. Records patients’ medical histories and symptoms, operates medical machinery, administers/orders treatment and medications, and coordinates patient follow-up and rehabilitation; assures all procedures for maintaining patient confidentiality are maintained per HIPAA guidelines. Identifies education needed to assure competent delivery of patient care for oneself and others in the department. Performs patient care procedures.

Other Specific job duties include: 

Calling in medication refills when necessary.

Complete prior authorizations for medication refills.

Cross coverage for patient call triaging, prescription refills on sick/vacation days.

Prepare seizure action plans, letters, FMLA and disability forms as directed by MD.

Collaborate with physicians and RN coordinators to ensure appropriate patient care is delivered.


Essential Duties

1. Obtains patient histories and medical information. 2. Assists with medical and minor surgical procedures. Assesses, reports, and records vital signs and measurements. Collects specimens. 3. Observes patients for physical or emotional changes. Reports observations. 4. Prepares examining rooms. Selects, sets up and maintains medical supplies and equipment. 5. Maintains a comfortable, orderly, safe and clean environment for patients. 6. Responds to medical emergencies. Records patient information. 7. Prepares patients for continuing care after treatment. 8. May instruct other LPNs. May serve as a source of information on nursing matters pertaining to section. May administer medications under direction and authority of professional medical staff person. 9. Schedules and coordinates patient and test appointments. 10. Performs additional functions incidental to nursing activities.


Required Education and Experience

Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities and effectively meet deadlines.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated responsibility managing patient questions with physician oversight.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Excellent attendance. Proven ability to work independently, take initiative and be self-motivated.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to understand complicated written instructions, memoranda, and policy statements.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability to extract and compile a range of data from written sources, individuals by asking questions, from one or more databases, and provide limited interpretation of data.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Trained in EPIC. Proven experience in Neurology.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Graduation from a State approved program of practical nurse education.
