Organizational Unit Overview
Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
Network Engineering and Support is one of the many service areas provided within the ITCS Network Services. The primary purpose of Network Engineering and Support team is the installation, deployment, maintenance, and automation of the various network services, including enterprise-level network systems or services that are part of, affect or influence the enterprise network infrastructure. This team works with the Network Architect in developing the overall network design and will engage them for consultation services on major network issues and design changes that significantly impact or influence network performance.
Job Duties
Providing direction on the day-to-day planning and organizing of team members’ work, valuations and professional growth
-High-level, in-depth technical capacity in the following core areas of responsibility but not limited to IP routing, switching, wireless, and associated security, monitoring and reporting systems
-Provides expert level support in assisting team members as well as other support teams and university users with resolving complex wired and wireless network problems
-Advanced technical knowledge to assist others in the resolution of service incidents and service requests and will focus on change, release, configuration, problem, and incident management processes as they relate to network services
-Oversee and lead the Disaster Recovery planning, testing, implementation, and documentation
-Formulate and maintain strategic technology contacts and partnerships with university departments, key technology suppliers, vendors, and contractors
-Planning, cost containment, configuration, optimization, maintenance, security, and implementation of current and emerging technologies
Attending provisioning meetings to gather customer requirements, installing configurations into test and production environments, and obtaining final customer acceptance
-Consults with senior level decision-makers, on anon-going basis, to develop long-range strategic alternatives.
-Other duties as assigned.
-Duties may require On-Call responsibilities.
-Employees are required to adjust their standard work schedule to meet the
requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening
and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload
requirements to maintain University operations.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. For management roles, a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • A technology-related degree with an emphasis on networking
  • Host-to-host communications
  • Hands-on network engineering experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining a campus wide network solution
  • Knowledge and experience working with the TCP/IP protocol suite
  • Proficiency with IT construction standards, fiber optics and Ethernet cabling
  • Experience in network management and monitoring solutions (Cisco DNA, Cisco Prime)
  • Strong understanding and experience with interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for LAN hardware, including routers, controllers, switches, access points, RF design, and protocol analysis.
  • CCNA and/or CCNP certifications completed or renewed within the last 5 years
  • Management of highly complex short and long-term projects
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Team-oriented and skilled in working within a collaborative environment
