The Opportunity

As a Network Engineer I with the Technical Operations Team, you will play a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operation of the UCF network. You will be primarily responsible handling a wide range of break/fix issues and network-related service requests. You will also assist monitoring the overall health of the network and managing the team's ticket queues to ensure the team's high standard of performance metrics. During the start of each Fall semester, Technical Operations focuses mostly on supporting students moving into on-campus housing. You will have opportunity to be involved with longer-term projects that will ensure the network's high performance, reliability, and security. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping the future of our network environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Under direct supervision and mentorship, the Network Engineer I serves as initial point of contact, taking prompt action in addressing and resolving network issues and fulfilling service requests. These include but are not limited to wired and wireless troubleshooting, network configuration changes, and deploying network equipment.

  • Ensures assigned tickets and projects are completed within set performance metrics and to the standards of the university and department.

  • Performs the implementation of entry level network technologies and can solve basic network problems through physical and logical investigation.

  • Works within network software applications (Service Now, Secure CRT, Site Engine, Cisco Prime, etc...) to complete assigned tasks. Will assist other team members with tickets, projects, documentation as required.

  • Works directly with manufacture escalation services (Cisco and Extreme TAC), process RMA's and communicate effectively with UCF IT Telecommunications management and UCF customers.

  • Utilizes network software to effectively monitor overall network health, utilization, and potential issues. Based on system information, will provide status reports and solutions to current or future network issues.

  • Attends various seminars, training, and conferences related to current or emerging technologies as needed.

  • Will be given various opportunities to obtain certifications based on specific training and departmental goals.

  • Follows SOP as determined by the specific sub-group within the department. This includes work-order/ticket flows, documentation, outage communication and customer interactions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Network Deployment and Support:

  • Basic LAN and wireless skills to efficiently diagnose and resolve issues.

  • Project management experience to oversee vendor assisted deployments.

  • Knowledgeable in OSPF, IOS-XE, EXOS, VLANs, Spanning-Tree, IoT devices, Windows, MacOS, etc.

2. Certifications:

  • Cisco Certified Support Technician and/or Network Associate.

  • CompTIA Security+ and/or Network+.

  • Extreme Networks training and/or certifications.

Special Instructions to the Applicants: 

This position must be available 24/7 in case of an emergency and maybe asked to work during emergency situations including early, late, weekend, holiday hours and/or University closures such as during a hurricane. Since UCF IT Telecommunications is considered a Mission Essential component of UCF's operational capability. This position is required to be in the office Monday-Friday. Additionally, a person in this position maybe asked to work a flexible schedule that includes non-traditional hours to perform essential job functions that cannot be performed during normal business hours.
