Job Summary

The Carr Center seeks a Multimedia Communications Coordinator to support the broad communications activities of the Center. The Carr Center has a small and collaborative team, and the Coordinator is expected to work under light supervision with the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a self-motivated, flexible, proactive, and detail-oriented manner. They should have the foresight to plan, the judgment to check in advance on sensitive concerns, and a problem-solving approach when dealing with a range of projects.  

Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Communications (Director), the Multimedia Communications Coordinator performs a wide range of complex communications duties within the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy agenda as set by the Director and Center leadership. This position works regularly with staff, fellows, and other constituents within and outside of Harvard. The Center seeks a creative person to implement graphic design assignments, regular social media maintenance, weekly communications, publication production, event documentation, and website maintenance.  


Position Description

Responsible for implementing the overall design and illustrative/graphic /visuals for use in Center publications, scholarly work, and events, in close collaboration with the Director. Serves as principal coordinator for graphic publication production while managing a prescribed budget. Works collaboratively with the Director of Communications, vendors, and other stakeholders.  

Graphic Design and Publication Coordination:

  • Coordinates all administrative aspects of production, including preparing final designs for presentation, checking and approving color, copy, text format separations, and scaling images for print production. Ensures that all parties are informed of and meet deadlines.  
  • Prepares layouts, designs, artwork and formats for use in publication design and social media;  
  • In close collaboration with Director, designs, lays out, and produces artwork such as graphs, maps, charts, posters, logos, signs and report covers, as needed;  
  • Coordinates all aspects of production, often of multiple publications; using desktop publishing or other publication-specific software tools;  
  • Coordinate relationship with vendors; preparing specifications and obtaining estimates for final approval;  
  • May handle copyright, reprint, and permission processes;  
  • May provide information to faculty, students and staff regarding design of publication;  
  • Coordinate post-production activities, such as mailing, mail house arrangements, coordinating copyright registration, and permissions activities.  

Multimedia communications:

  • Administers the Center’s social media platforms, mailing lists, and weekly newsletter communications;  
  • Maintains the Center website and makes edits to pages; adds news stories, podcast episodes, and new affiliates;
  • Produces interesting and creative content such as photo and video, animations, infographics, etc.;  
  • Take photographs at events; maintain photo, clip and contact files; may organize and oversee photo shoots, and related events as directed;
  • Coordinates dissemination of Center’s bi-weekly podcast with Director, including creating social media graphics, posting and disseminating final episodes on various platforms;
  • Performs related duties as needed.   

Basic Qualifications

At least 1 year of communications related experience. Related internships will count toward experience. Demonstrated skills with design and publication software such as Adobe suite of products.  


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • At least three years of graphic arts and publications experience with proven project management skills preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of printing, publishing and/or graphics art procedures and related computer software.
  • Skills with data visualization highly desired.
  • Ability to work across teams and with a variety of projects, vendors and constituencies.
  • Requires strong knowledge of desktop publishing and/or graphics software packages.
  • Relevant skills test may be required during the interview process.
  • Portfolio of graphic design, publications, or related communications design work desired. 
  • College degree in Fine Arts is a plus

This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending June 30, 2025, with possibility of renewal.

Salary Range : $59,027 - $93,064
Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity. 


Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
