Morning Edition Producer/Host
Position Summary
This position would serve as the producer and local host for ‘Morning Edition’. Primary responsibilities include producing and presenting local newscasts and breaks in Morning Edition and anchoring additional newscasts, reporting human-interest features and producing and scheduling on-air interviews, creating digital content to supplement on-air stories and attending occasional in-person station events with listeners.
This person will work closely with the News Director, News Editor, Assignment Editor, other program hosts, reporters, the Senior Director of Radio Operations as well as student interns.
Core work hours will be 5:00am to 1:00pm with opportunity for a flexible schedule depending on coverage needs of the day as well as station needs including fundraising and special broadcasts. This position has opportunity for a hybrid working schedule with a minimum of two days per week in-office. Remote work agreements are continuously reviewed based on the needs of the organization and guidance provided by the College of Communication Arts & Sciences and Michigan State University.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Produce and host local segments between 5:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on our two NPR member stations.
Write and anchor news segments, consistently delivering a professional on-air presentation while operating the control board during live broadcasts or hosting the show remotely.
Pitch, produce and edit audio-rich features with multiple viewpoints and sources of sound. Produce and conduct interviews for broadcast.
Produce digital content including web stories.
Collaborate with WKAR’s digital team on other projects as assigned.
Participate in pledge drive trainings and serve as talent during fund drives as well as marketing activities, community engagement projects and other audience interactions as assigned on behalf WKAR.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Telecommunications, Journalism, or Broadcast Production; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in radio production, broadcast operations, rules and regulations and interviewing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require a FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator 's Permit.
Three to five years experience working in a newsroom.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in broadcasting, communication, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in radio production, broadcast operations, rules and regulations and interviewing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Three to five years experience working in a newsroom.
Public media experience.
- Hosting experience.
Experience hosting or producing Morning Edition, All Things Considered, or Weekend Edition
Experience using acontent managementsystem.
Demonstrated ability to produce high quality news content and programming.
Experience with automations systems and audio editing.
Ability to work live or pre-recorded as necessary.
Ability to work on multiple tasks, on deadline, under pressure, with minimal supervision.
Self-motivated with experience turning ideas into action.
Prior experience writing broadcast-style copy.
Experience with on-air fundraising.
