Job Description

The State Molecular Epidemiologist is a professional disease control investigator who can utilize microbial genomic laboratory data to help inform and direct investigations.  The position shall maintain continuous working knowledge of laboratory methods. Genomic epidemiology analyses will be communicated to epidemiologists and disease control investigators at the state and local levels in Nevada.  The position is also responsible for ensuring that the information generated at the Laboratory is not only collected, but is also operationalized effectively.  The position shall work closely with state and local epidemiologists who investigate infectious disease outbreaks and will work collaboratively to understand the specific needs of genomic data dependent upon the etiology and scope of the outbreak.  The position will maintain continuous strategic genomic intelligence of infectious disease presence in Nevada.  The position will continuously manage databases of organisms detected and genomically described at the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory.  The position will be expected to maintain collaborative partnerships with applied public health epidemiologists and disease investigators throughout the state and will be expected to have a training period along with continuous learning of disease investigation, outbreak response, infection control practices, and other mitigation measures specific to the etiology of concern.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate an enthusiasm for working with new and evolving pathogenic infection tracking methodologies and technologies; building relationships internally and externally; and lifelong learning. A high degree of communication expertise is required; this position will serve as an ambassador that must understand data to a degree that they are able to disseminate this information to external clients and stakeholders, as well as build relationships both inside and outside of the State Health Lab.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and five years of related professional work experience OR

Master’s Degree and three years of related professional work experience OR

Doctoral Degree and one year of related professional work experience.

Related Work Experience:

Experience in public health or infection control, work within the disease control component of a hospital or health department, experience analyzing epidemiologic data and/or teaching technical topics

Preferred Qualifications

Background in molecular biology and genomics

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
