Molecular Biology Technician

The Cancer Genomics Facility, a core laboratory for the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, seeks an enthusiastic and skilled laboratory technician. Under the supervision of the Facility Manager, the incumbent will perform technical skills of a highly specialized nature. Involving: histology; imaging/microscopy; FFPE sample processing; RNA extraction; sample quality control; PCR; spatial gene expression library prep; single cell gene expression library prep; and other miscellaneous molecular biology techniques. The individual must be able to concurrently manage multiple laboratory protocols. The individual should be able to effectively communicate progress of research projects via meetings with, and written reports to, the Facility Manager.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions 

Perform bench work, database management. Candidate will spend most of the time either performing bench work (for example, doing PCR) or at the computer (for example: designing protocols/entering data).


Physical Effort 

Minimal to moderate physical effort. Does require some moving around from place to place and standing for several hours at a time. Candidate must be able to lift lab supplies from the boxes when they arrive at the lab and place on the bench and or shelves.
