Under general supervision the Milk Plant worker (S09) will provide support and services for instruction, research, and extension for the production and distribution of food and dairy products, for consumption by the Cornell Community. The individual will utilize equipment and technologies at the Cornell Dairy Plant while strictly adhering to all protocols, rules, regulations, and guidelines for quality, safety and reporting, including those set forth by the USDA, FDA and New York State Ag & Markets. Assist dairy management team with the coordination and execution of dairy equipment maintenance programs, including associated recordkeeping, of all equipment and vehicles associated with the operations of the Dairy Plant. Individual will coordinate and perform sanitary maintenance functions on dairy processing equipment as required to meet all local, state and federal guidelines and regulations and internal food safety plan. Help to monitor, and document proper operation, of all cooling systems, equipment, and sanitary piping. Provide support and services for research, instruction, and extension programs of the Department of Food Science, particularly those related to the procurement and processing of dairy products. Assist the management team to maintain Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP), quality control, equipment maintenance and master sanitation programs. Assist with the inventory and receiving of raw materials; maintain inventory records as required. Perform all responsibilities in accordance with all safety and regulatory requirements of Cornell University, the USDA, FDA and New York State Ag & Markets. Assist with tours of the facility as necessary.  Assist with coordination of the Dairy Internship Program.  Provide direction to undergraduate students, staff and faculty and plant policies, protocols and safety procedures and training on proper equipment usage.  

This position requires independent action and the ability to work cooperatively with other team members. Work days and work times vary throughout the year. Work hours may vary from 4:30 am to 5:30 pm. Work schedule may vary from Monday through Friday and include Saturday and Sunday when deemed necessary.

Required Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Food Science, and a minimum of 2-3 years practical dairy/food manufacturing experience or 5-6 years of practical dairy/food manufacturing experience, with equivalent combination of training (college, trade school or food and/or dairy processing work experience), including 2-3 years of experience performing sanitary maintenance on dairy/food processing equipment. Leadership experience a plus. Knowledge of process equipment safety regulations and procedures strongly preferred; experience training others on safety a plus.  Experience working in manual labor position under variety of extreme climate conditions. Ability to lift more than 50lbs. Ability to work overtime when necessary.  Prior dairy and/or food processing and sanitation experience. Mechanical repair and maintenance experience, particularly of specialized food processing equipment, a plus.

Have or willingness to get within 6 months of hire a New York State Commercial Driver’s License (NYS CDL-B (tanker endorsement) and get a Milk Receivers Permit, and Appendix N License.

General computer knowledge and data entry procedures. Strong math and record keeping skills. Possesses excellent organizational and communication skills and takes pride in their work. Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide-range of coworkers, students, faculty, customers and general public. Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently to accomplish required tasks to achieve departmental objectives. Must be personable, flexible, and be able to multi-task in a fast paced industrial-type setting. Must be a self-starter, interested in progressing knowledge of dairy science and the operation and maintenance of production equipment. Proven ability to work in a team environment and complete tasks/assignments in an efficient, safe and timely manner while complying with Federal Health and Safety Regulations for the production of food products.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in an agricultural field or equivalent experience. Experience working in and around a University research setting.  Familiarity with the maintenance of food processing equipment.
