MILE is an interdisciplinary initiative recently funded by the University of Maryland in partnership with Morgan State University. The goal of MILE is to harness research-to-practice partnerships in the fields of education, speech and language pathology, library sciences, policy, and community stakeholder outreach. These efforts are aimed at driving integrative research about literacy broadly defined, both translational and basic, that is contextualized with respect to marginalized communities across race, culture, ethnicity, and language, as well as neurodiverse populations. This includes working on specific MILE research grants (dependent on expertise and grants awarded to members of the MILE research subcommittee), contributing to additional MILE proposals, publications, and presentations. Other activities may include representing MILE research at both internal meetings (e.g., MILE executive meetings with other pillars), as well as external meetings and conferences to forge new research-practice partnerships with local school districts, libraries, and/or community organizations.
The Assistant Research Scientist will have access to and be expected to collaborate with other UMD faculty, research scientists (e.g., professional track faculty), postdoctoral associates, and students. This position provides opportunities for professional development with respect to various methodologies, research techniques and approaches, and engagement with populations of learners and practitioners both inside and outside of the PK-12 educational system.
