The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a collaborative and mission-driven Medical Technologist for its Molecular Diagnostics laboratory. This individual will be responsible for performing a variety of molecular techniques that encompass specimen processing and testing, in support of the unit’s diagnostic services.  


What you will do: 


The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: 


  • Perform routine molecular diagnostic testing.  
  • Extract, PCR and analyze DNA or RNA from a large number and variety of samples such as blood, feces, tissues, milk, etc. quickly and accurately. 
  • Develop and perform a comprehensive range of molecular biological procedures used in assays for the diagnosis of viral and bacterial infection, and genetic analysis. 
  • Provide general laboratory maintenance, order supplies, keep inventories, develop and maintain quality system documentation, perform calibrations and schedule equipment maintenance and repair. 
  • Use a wide range of software for data input, sequence analysis and comparisons, primer and probe development, and graphical and statistical analysis of data. 
  • Ensure adherence to and maintain records for safety procedures including biosafety and chemical safety. Perform other duties as assigned. 


Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies. Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success. Employees working in the lab must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department. 


 


This position is 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.  


This is a three-year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.

What you will need: 


  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related field, with up to two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Experience with molecular techniques including DNA/RNA isolation and purification, and PCR. 

  • Ability to work within a biological safety cabinet at BSL2 and BSL3 using a range of manual and automated pipettes for extended periods of time. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify and troubleshoot problems. 

  • Demonstrated experience with standard commercial software (Microsoft Office), with the ability to learn advanced functions and new software. 

  • Excellent relational, oral, and written communication skills along with attention to details.  

  • Strong attention to accuracy and detailed record keeping, with the ability to perform laboratory procedures with precision and efficiency. 

  • Ability to handle delicate, confidential information with tact and discretion. 

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, workstations or while using laboratory equipment. 

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 20 pounds.

  • Experience with Quality Assurance systems, assay development, and liquid handling robotic systems. 


  • Knowledge and understanding of real-time PCR, sequencing, and recombinant methods.
