The Department of Pathology is currently seeking a full time Medical Technologist 2 to work in Miami, FL. The Medical Technologist 2 performs microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Moreover, the incumbent facilitates quality assurance and instrument maintenance.

This position is a full-time position in the SCCC Research Lab at the University of Miami UHealth Tower.  

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Verifies identification of specimen with physicians’ orders, prepares specimens for testing, and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.

  • Analyzes results of testing and interprets abnormal or unusual results.

  • Researches and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers all data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.

  • Calibrates equipment, orders supplies, and maintains inventory of relevant forms and materials. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action while supporting laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems.

  • Administers quality-control tests, according to procedure, and maintains appropriate data recording.

  • Assists with orienting and training employees on laboratory techniques and operations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

Research Protocol Specific Functions:  

  • Review orders for sample processing and compare to research lab manual and protocol.

  • Process samples as required by the lab manual and protocol.

  • Prepare samples for short-term or long-term storage or

  • Prepare samples for shipping to sponsor.

  • Scan and uploads documentation into required formats after completion of sample shipment.

  • Contacts shipping companies (Fedex, UPS and others for pickup as needed).

  • Reviews daily patient schedule to triage workload as needed.

  • Participate or conduct research protocol lab manual training for new studies.

  • Sit in Site Initiation Visits with study team and relay information to Lab team members.

  • Update freezer logs for batch shipping.

  • Update freezer temperature logs.

  • Assist in the development of lab policy & procedure.

  • Participate in lab staff meetings and provide updates on specific projects.

  • Log in and out samples for drop off and pick-up.

  • Maintain research related certifications.

  • Provide answers to sponsor queries.

  • Provide documentation or answers to CRC staff and management.

  • Produce reports as requested by supervisor or Lab Director.

  • Assist in the on-boarding of new employees.

Laboratory Activities  

  • Keeps lab clean, neat and organized.

  • Performs housekeeping duties to remove clutter.

  • Removes empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures.  

  • Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.

  • Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.

  • Contact Biomedical department if equipment needs service.

  • Provides support to all areas when specimen transport/computer systems are down as per protocol.

  • Adheres to all UMHC Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control and Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Respects the rights, privacy and property of others at all times including the confidentiality of information, according to Administrative Policies, the Privacy Act of 1974 and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Participates in the Performance Improvement of the department.  PI also includes documentation of all problems, complaints for QA/PI analysis and/or to the Supervisor.

  • Participates in continuing Performance Improvement to ensure continuous improvement of services provided.  Attends appropriate orientation and training courses to maintain competency in job skills and knowledge.  Participates in required educational program, including HIS, safety, infection control, etc.

  • Follows hospital-wide and unit specific safety and infection control standards.

  • Work on projects assigned by Supervisor/Manager.
