Certified Nursing Assistant

Student Health Center

The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee invites applications for the position of a Certified Nursing Assistant in the Student Health Center. The position is a full-time position, scheduled for 8 hours per day, Monday – Friday.

The mission of the Student Health Center is to provide a comprehensive, moderate-complexity program of primary health care services relevant to the needs of eligible University of Tennessee students.  These services include medical health care, health promotion, education, consultation, and educational experiences for selected students pursuing careers in health professions.

The Position:  The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), under the supervision of the Nursing Supervisor of the Student Health Center, performs phlebotomy and routine CLIA-waived tests for the SHC Laboratory, a moderate-complexity Physician’s office laboratory. The CNA assists with laboratory sample preparation for on-site medical technologists or for transport to a reference laboratory, files reports for communicable diseases, and assists with start-up lab procedures daily. The CNA assists as needed with obtaining 12 lead EKGs. Additionally, the CNA assists with patient care as requested by performing initial patient assessments and obtaining vital signs. The position requires the CNA to assist with cleaning patient exam rooms, entering patient information into the electronic medical record, handling medical documentation, and referral information for patients, and making follow-up and referral appointments as needed.

 



Qualifications

 

The duties include:

  • Laboratory Duties/Responsibilities:

1.      Perform phlebotomy for patients sent for lab work.

2.      Prepare samples for lab technologists and for transport to reference laboratory.

3.      Clean the phlebotomy station after each patient.

4.      Participate in lab test and phlebotomy competency and proficiency testing.

5.      Perform CLIA-waived laboratory tests.

6.      Assist in sending results via the electronic medical record.

7.      Assist in stocking laboratory supplies and monitoring of expiration dates.

8.      Chaperone EKG exams as needed.

9.      Assist with laboratory front desk duties as needed.

  • Clinical Duties/Responsibilities:

1.      Maintain CNA License and BLS with AED certification.

2.      Maintain annual training in blood-borne pathogens, handwashing techniques, and other modules as assigned by supervisor.

3.      Maintain protected health information as outlined in FERPA.

4.      Assist in patient visits by directing them to the exam room, determining the reason for the visit, and obtaining vital signs and other basic information.

5.      Obtain required patient screening question information.

6.      Provide accurate and precise reports regarding the patient to the provider.

7.      Clean and restock exam rooms after each patient exam.

8.      Assist with patient transport within the clinic.

9.      Chaperone sensitive exams and obtain consent forms for certain exams and procedures.

10.  Perform “point-of-care” (POC) testing and bedside phlebotomy as instructed by the provider.

11.  Assist in the training of patients on how to properly use durable medical equipment.

12.  Document pertinent medical information in the EMR.

13.  Assist in obtaining follow-up appointments and referral appointments.

14.  Scan additional medical records into the EMR and fax or securely email records to referral providers.

15.  Answer telephone calls and ensure all messages are delivered to the appropriate staff member.

16.  Assist as needed in 911/emergency situations.

What We Require:

Education:

·         High School diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.

·         Completion 

Licensure:of Certified Nurse Aide Training or Certified Medical Assistant 

·         Current State of Tennessee license as a Certified Nurse Aide

Experience:

·         Must have a minimum of two years of experience as a licensed certified nurse aide.

·         Prefer five years of experience as a licensed certified nurse aide.

·         Must be detailed oriented, can multi-task, and possess strong verbal communication skills.

·         Must have experience working within a windows-based computer system. Prefer electronic health record experience.
