Position Focus:

In 1971, Yale University began a unique and historic experiment in providing health services to its faculty, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, built in 2010 is where our members receive most of their care. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility, a diagnostic imaging suite and a full-service retail pharmacy. It houses our 150+ providers, including 111 primary and consulting physicians.

We are currently seeking an experienced medical assistant to join the department of Internal Medicine. This department provides care in a busy, patient-centered environment at Yale Health. The Medical Assistant will provide care to patients as part of a collaborative and supportive team. They will prepare patients for examinations, provide chaperone assistance, provide routing information related to medical treatments and procedures, measure and record vital signs, collect and label specimens, perform all CLIA-waived/POCT testing; assist clinical staff with procedures, treatments and exams, maintain exam rooms, monitor supplies, stock and equipment; retrieve, process and document activities related to lab and diagnostic test results and perform clerical functions which may include telephone reception. Other duties as needed by department.

Essential Duties

1. Maintains comfortable, orderly, safe, and clean environment.  2. Prepares patients for examinations. Provides routine information related to medical treatments and procedures.  3. Measures and records vital signs. Collects specimens. Prepares examining rooms. Selects and lays out medical supplies.  4. Maintains medical equipment. Records and reports patient information. Retrieves laboratory test results and patient files.  5. Escorts patients and visitors. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.  6. Performs clerical functions related to medical activities.


Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability as a medical assistant in a hospital or outpatient setting. Proficiency in all Point of Care Testing (POCT) including CLIA-waived testing. Demonstrated proficiency properly labeling and handling of specimens.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability to perform in stressful situations. Flexibility and willingness to move easily between tasks. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster positive, respectful relationships with co-workers and a diverse population.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-developed critical thinking skills and the demonstrated ability to use sound independent judgment.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proficiency in the use of an EMR or clinical scheduling system.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to be reliable and dependable in attendance and punctuality, as confirmed by references.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Demonstrated experience with set-up and assisting with minor surgical procedures using sterile technique; previous proven experience as a medical assistant in an outpatient setting. Proficiency in Epic.


Required Licenses or Certifications

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or American Registry of Medical Assistants (or ability to get certification/registration within 90 days of employment).
