Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm, with some limited evenings and weekends


Job Summary: The Medical Assistant I provides assistance to nurses and nurse practitioners with the basic functions of a medical office. Triages patients. Performs vital signs check and venipuncture.


Additional Department Summary: The Medical Assistant I is responsible for facilitating quality patient care at the University Medical Center OBGYN Clinic. Provides medical/surgical assistance to physicians and nurses and prepares patients for consultations. Provides general clinical assistance as needed; duties include staffing receptionist desk, screening calls, making referrals, verifying insurances, scheduling appointments and follow-up visits. Assists in providing nursing care as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and six (6) months of healthcare work experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform patient care as directed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified medical professional. Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills; excellent communication, public relations, and customer service and telephone etiquette skills. Willingness to learn and consistently deliver patient-centered, high-quality customer service. Ability to maintain strict confidentially of protected health information and follow HIPAA regulations at all times. Punctual and reliable.


Preferred Qualifications: NCCA-Accredited certification - Medical Assistant (CCMA) and/or CPT Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) preferred. Experience with computers and Electronic Health records systems.
