Job Purpose:
This classification works under the direction of a supervisor, manager, Media Technician II, or the client. This level performs basic setups and strikes and/or assists other Media Technicians and others as instructed.

The supervisor schedules the work, specifies the equipment needed and provides specific guidelines concerning setup for the program.

Media Technician I must be able to adapt the setup to accommodate last-minute changes or emergencies. They perform tasks as assigned by the Supervisor. Work may be reviewed frequently during progress. 


Core Duties*:

  • Pack, load, and deliver equipment to the venue.
  • Set up, operate, and remove audio, video, basic lighting, stands and other lighting supports or computer equipment. Handle wireless microphone systems.
  • Determine environmental logistics such as placement of speakers, microphones, or location of cables.
  • Consult with client to ensure proper setup of appropriate equipment and placement of equipment to accomplish client’s purpose.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repair of equipment.
  • Clean and maintain university equipment and/or property.
  • May instruct and demonstrate the operation of equipment.
  • May operate still, television and motion picture cameras, under close supervision.
  • Assist in coordination and execution of Stanford’s “Big 5“events.
  • Participate and assist in the physical set up or strike of venues and events
  • Complete post event reports.
  • Transport, pick-up and return equipment.
  • Adhere to safety rules and protocols.

Education & Experience:

  • Prior experience in at least one area of media technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and/or demonstrated experience in the setup and operation of at least one media technology.
  • Ability to take direction and communicate effectively. Ability to follow job-related instructions both written and verbal.
  • Ability to interact professionally, courteously, and respectfully, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work under high-pressure time requirements with variable work schedules and in a fast-moving and rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s License and drive day and night.
  • Ability to lift equipment weighing 50lbs and greater than 75lbs with assistance.
  • Constantly lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Frequently stand/walk/sit, kneel/crawl light/fine/forceful grasping lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-40 pounds.
  • Occasionally climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), work/reach above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, use telephone, write by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh more than 40 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, perform desk based computer tasks, sort/file paperwork or parts, sweep/scrub/mop, operate foot/ hand controls

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • Often work under time restrictions and with frequent last-minute changes.
  • May be required to work any shift, including evenings and weekends.
  • Adhere to department specific dress code.
  • May work at heights exceeding 10 feet.

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

The expected pay range for this position is $36.18 to $43.67 per hour.

This is a 75% FTE position. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
