General Information
James Madison University’s Libraries is seeking a full-time Media Specialist to join the Media Production and Makerspace Services (MPMS) department. MPMS oversees spaces (including a makerspace and production studio) that are used to collaborate with the JMU community to create, explore, instruct, and problem-solve using cutting-edge technologies, multimedia equipment, workshops, and events.
The Media Specialist will work with faculty and staff to enhance the teaching and learning experience of the JMU community by creating instructional media that can be used within courses and departments. This position conducts, manages, and assists with media production projects within the production studio spaces. The Media Specialist will also provide technical advice and assistance to patrons within the makerspace, primarily on A/V production, but also including digital photography, 3D modeling and printing, and graphic creation.
This position has an initial one-year funding commitment. The position’s renewal/continuance is contingent upon continued funding.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Media Specialist will:
  • Conduct, manage, and assist with media production projects, including directing, lighting, camerawork, motion graphic creation, and post-production editing.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to MPMS patrons on topics such as video production, audio recording, 3D modeling and printing, Adobe Creative Cloud software, etc.
  • Continue to develop and apply learned expertise to projects and tasks which may include researching and testing emerging software and technology.
  • Effectively apply policies, manage problems, ensure proper equipment use, and document work according to procedures.
  • Assist in the management and training of MPMS student staff under the direction of the department leadership.
Qualifications
A successful candidate will have:
  • Demonstrated skills in the video production process, including camera operation, different camera and lens types, proper recording techniques, lighting design, studio configurations, audio production, and post-production.
  • Understanding of equipment and processes related to audio and video production.
  • Ability to troubleshoot both hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of media production, teleconferencing, and office applications (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including attention to detail, time management, and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with co-workers and patrons as a member of a team.
  • Articulated ability to help foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.

Additional considerations:
  • Familiarity with graphic design, photography, and 3D printing and modeling.
  • Ability to effectively integrate instructional media with other technologies, especially web-oriented technologies.
  • Ability to assist others in developing skills and knowledge related to instructional media.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic training and consultation strategies and practices.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
